“History for all”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 12, 2012

The abbey tells its own story, so many places of interest and people. So who was the Earl of Leicester and what connections did he have with the neighbouring disctricts... Find out from plaquards and history walks.

“Pleasant and traditional!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 26, 2012

A great place top spend a couple of hours and especially with kids. Lots to do and see - historic ruins, rowing boats, railway, formal gardens, playing fields, canside walk, tea rooms, themed events, aboretum, playground, mini-zoo, cycle tracks, bandstand and music, cricket matches. A traditional victorian park!

Had a few hours to kill so we set off to find this place and it was worth the effort. Lovely setting and well kept surroundings.

“Beautiful Park with activities”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 13, 2012

Go to http://www.leicester.gov.uk/your-council-services/lc/parks-green-spaces/main-parks/abbey-park/abbeypark/ for more info and map (have to click to open this and has pink trails shown on it). This is a great park for people of all ages to visit - however unlike many other large parks it has historical significance. Abbey foundations can be seen ( and walked on!) and also remains of Cavendish house. There is also a miniature railway (beware though as only open at very limited times) and rowing / peddle boats to ride around one of the lakes (again watch the opening times). There is also the unexpected free animal area (open working hours every day) - this is great for kids - although I like it too! It has goats, rabbits, various birds (peacocks, hens, lovebirds etc) and guinea pigs (there may be more but I can't be sure). The animal area is free. There is a basic cafe in the centre of the park. If it is a hot weekend I'm sure you will see cricketers in The Oval near small childrens play area. Also make sure you take bread to feed the MANY birds and geese that will often eat out of your hand :) Squirrels are also a regular sight and if you visit when it is just dark you will probably see hedgehogs and foxes too and sometimes even bats (but you can't really see them as just swish past).
The canal and river run through the park, if you like walking you can carry on up the canal to Watermead Park - which is also well worth a visit. Or walk in the opposite direction down the canal to Castle Park which again has historical significance and you can visit 'Old walled area of Leicester" and Newark Museum.
If you exit the park onto Abbey Road, Canal side of the park (not A6/B&Q side). You will find yourself almost at the bottom of the Golden Mile - another good tourist attraction. As you can probably tell I have been here a lot and work close by. Suitable for families, romantic couples, picnics, elderly (fine for wheelchairs) or for a little stroll or sunbathe or book reading by yourself!

“Very unusual smaller church”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 29, 2012

Worth a visit especially because of the twice-added on portions that create unusual space.
