Broadway Hotel

We (myself, my husband + 2 teenage boys) visit Blackpool annually and usually stay in a different hotel/b&b each time. We are neither picky customers nor fussy eaters. We rarely complain about anything and accept that you “pay for what you get”. All we want is a clean ensuite room, friendly staff and a decent breakfast, in a not too rowdy part of Blackpool. NOT MUCH TO ASK….?
We paid £70 for 1 night for 2 rooms (1 double/1 twin) at the Broadway Hotel through Booking.com in August 2013. The reviews for the Hotel weren’t that good but we usually take the reviews with a pinch of salt. BAD MISTAKE ON THIS OCCASION.
On arrival, we were told that there’d been an error with our booking and that we’d been allocated 2 double rooms – not the double + twin that we’d specifically wanted for our family and that the hotel was fully booked. The rooms + bathrooms looked clean enough, with clean towels provided and tea/coffee making facilities in the rooms. Yes, the rooms were small, the décor was outdated and the beds were soft - but that’s what we expected and that’s what we’ve experienced in most of the Blackpool hotels we’ve stayed in. Neither the light nor the TV was working in our sons’ room (but we didn’t complain about this since we knew it would mean them getting more sleep!)
In the evening, we decided to sample a drink in the hotel bar. As we left our 2nd floor bedrooms and headed towards reception, a terrible stench met us – the smell of sewage. It may have been coming from some downstairs toilets. In the bar - quite a large room, suitable for some decent entertainment (had there been any) we were the only customers. Surprising really, given that the hotel was supposed to be fully booked (and it probably was, given that there were no spare tables in the restaurant at breakfast the following morning). We couldn’t hack the smell long enough to stay for a second drink, so headed over the road to The Silversands, where we had been advised to go by the Broadway Hotel staff if we wanted some evening entertainment.
On returning to the Broadway, fortunately the smell had gone and we went to bed. Woken by what we thought was the noise of rain against the window in the early hours of the morning, we were horrified to discover water dripping through the ceiling at the foot of the bed onto our belongings. Not wanting to disturb anyone else in the middle of the night, we placed towels on the floor to soak up the drips and tried to get some sleep… On waking, we noticed a gaping hole in the ceiling where one of panels (approx 40cm square) had come down and shattered all over the floor. The carpet and towels were obviously sodden and that corner of the room looked like a tip!
The staff member we reported it to took a look – couldn’t apologise enough and gave us a full refund on the room.
Plus points: The Hotel itself has a pleasant frontage in a quiet location near to the Pleasure Beach. Apart from the orange juice (like squash), the full English breakfast was fine and the staff were friendly. We had a full refund on one of the rooms - still doesn’t make up to the smell of sewage and the collapsed ceiling. NEXT TIME WE’LL TAKE MORE HEED OF REVIEWS!

Room Tip: Keep clear of this hotel altogether. If you have to stay there, avoid rooms 28 and 29.

What can I say......we have just returned from a weekend in Blackpool. On arrival in reception the smell instantly hit us in the face - it was awful - like rotten eggs/sewege mixed with stale smoke (even though it is supposed to be a non-smoking hotel!). We even had to spray our bedrooms with our own deodrant to get rid of the awful stench!!

The decor is in desperate need of an update with old fashioned carpets/furniture/wallpaper.

When shown to our room (a twin room for me and my son) we could hardly open the door as the beds were pushed right up against it - the window didn't shut (and it was gale force winds), the nets were disgusting. To be fair when I asked to be moved the owner did move us into a much more spacious room. The bathroom floor looked like it had never been cleaned - the shower was just vile. The mugs we had in the room for tea/coffee were all stained and old. I daren't walk around the room without my shoes on as the carpet looked dirty. My friend's room was even worse, she had a family room, there were stained tiles on the ceiling and stains on the walls, the tv had dust on it about 2" thick, the curtains were broke and didn't even close, the windows were absolutely filthy and didn't look like they had been cleaned inside or outside for years. Luckily we stayed out all day and didn't return to our hotel until 10pm.

The beds were lumpy and very uncomfortable so we didn't sleep very well either. Thank god we only had to stay for one night I cannot imagine having to stay any longer.

Then there was breakfast (if you can call it that), no fresh orange juice it was watered down orange squash, the tables were still untidy from the people before (and we had to ask for them to be cleaned). The choice of cereal was rubbish - cheap nasty cereal (my son didn't want a cooked breakfast so he just ate half a bowl of cheap coco pops!). There was no jam for the toast and there was even the cheek of a TIP basket by the cereals.

We couldn't wait to check out, we would never return to this hotel and would not recommend it to anyone. Thankfully we had a great time in Blackpool and that was because we stayed out of this hotel!!

The location of the hotel isn't too bad - its only about a 10 minute walk to the Pleasure Beach and there is free car parking at the front of the hotel - that is if you can get a space.

The hotel looked reasonable from the website photographs but completely disappointing doesn't even begin to describe our stay. We booked as part of a larger party but arrived a day later than the rest to be met with the news that the room we booked - a twin - was unavailable due to a leak in the room. My daughter and I were given keys to a single room with a fold out bed which when assembled, completely blocked access to the room door. When I complained, I was offered a double room with two floors further up. This room was unsuitable as my daughter is over 5ft tall and too big to share a bed with me. Both rooms looked run down but I expected this for the price and age of the building. What I didn't expect was the dirtiness, smelliness, and the unapologetic attitude/arrogance of the male attendant for the problem with the room allocation.
Problems encountered by members of our group included - being told that they hadn't paid and they had to pay again straightaway (the paid receipt later turned up in their office), dirty rooms - dusty and dirty, previous occupants food found in draws, mould around the taps, dirty shower trays, old razors left in shower, mould patches on the ceiling/walls, wallpaper selotaped were it had lifted due to damp, dried vomit on the wall and behind the toilet, unvacuumed carpets, no housekeeping as staff lost the spare room key, dirty breakfast tables/cutlery and crockery - clean ones were given from other breakfast tables and were equally as dirty, cold tea and coffee served at breakfast, very little cereal variety for those who don't eat cooked breakfasts (bought our own), smell of sewage in corridors..........
I am usually quite easily pleased but I would not recommend this hotel to anyone!
It is such a nice old building in an ideal location - it could be so much more :-(
Very disappointed!

Desperately needs cleaned but why bother when it needs completely refurbished. Dirty, smelly and that was at reception on arrival. After waiting in queue to check in and on our way to room we observed a women who was in front of us in queue carrying hover to go and hover her own room. On entering our room the musty stench was horrendous. coffee spilled down chest of drawers and not cleaned, carpet dirty and toilet area not cleaned properly. We had 2 rooms and both televisions did not work. This was reported to the manager who assured us all televisions were in working order and new Ariel had been installed however made no attempt to resolve the problem. Dinning room was also dirty however breakfast was ok and staff pleasant in manner. First time ever cut holiday short due to accommodation. I have stayed at cheap and cheerful in the past however it has been a long time since this place has been cheerful. I would advise do not book this hotel.

We booked this Hotel before reading the reviews which made us a little concerned as none of them were very good but when we got into the Hotel we were pleasantly surprised. It was lovely. We got a warm welcome and we were even allowed into our room early.
The room surprised us. It was spacious, comfortable and tidy. We certainly had no complaints as it provided us with exactly what we needed. We even had a sofa to relax on.
Breakfast is pleasant and service is good.
Location is excellent, close to beach and all other amenities.
I would advise that you read very little into the bad reviews.
This Hotel is a bargain. It;s not the Ritz but you are not paying Ritz prices.
We can only thank the staff for there hospitality. ( the King Family)
