“As described in most reviews - excellent”
Reviewed June 4, 2014

Firstly, the person who wrote the `bad` review last month(`Hungry`) must have different expectations of the place, and a holiday in general. As their website says, they offer ``good value``,not luxury. We use a bedroom to sleep in,having had a good time in Blackpool, not as something to go round picking fault. They are proud of their `score` on this site. What`s wrong with that ? -the score is an indicator of the fact that ,what they do,they do really well. It`s their livelihood : a higher score means more customers, means more business,etc..
Secondly,it is very true that Simon and Rhona, very ably supported by Freya and Stephen, offer an incredible place to stay at : customer service is spot-on; nothing is too much trouble ; everything is laid back (in a good way!) ; advice is given ,eg re Blackpool amenities ; they are courteous, polite and very friendly. We had a special dietary request, which was met with no problems or issues, for which we thank them. All in all, they contributed greatly to us having a superb holiday.Lastly, harking back to the `bad` review,we were under no pressure, direct or implied, about putting a review on this site. But I wanted to as it deserves to be at the top.
PS I very highly recommend Simon`s curry :Have lived abroad and in places like Manchester and Bradford-it was the best I`ve had !!

Room Tip: None-we wanted 2 rooms connected (3 kids) and got what we asked for.

Another fantastic stay. This time a double room for my son and his girlfriend and a single room for me. I cannot fault this place. The breakfast is the best ever. Simon and Rhona go the extra mile. Not forgetting Freya who also is very special. I would recommend to everyone. Cannot wait to return. Fab food, fab atmosphere, fab staff and fab rooms :)xx

Hi Jackie, it was so good to see you back in our little hotel. We tried the sheepdip last night, it is awesome. Hope the train journey back was a lot better than the bus ride on the way down!!!

Thanks so much Mary, also thanks for the 'ponchos' from the pleasure beach you left in the room, we used them on Valhalla a couple of weeks later. We've kept them for your next visit.

We stayed at The New Guilderoy Hotel a few years ago based upon the high ratings that it received on Tripadvisor. At the time we were disappointed and decided not to leave a review. It seemed that everyone apart from us thought it was something special.

This time we decided to return purely based on price. It had an offer that was really too good to refuse.

We were shown to our room and our first impression was "better than last time".

In our room was a folder where the owners, Simon and Rhona, explained their history with The New Guilderoy and what they want from the future. In it you will read that they have been the proprietors for ten years. They ask you to give them a 5 out 5 review and stress that a 4 out of 5 isn't good enough ! The premise is that if enough people give then "Excellent" reviews, more people will stay there and they will have more money to improve the business.

I've never run a Hotel / Guest House but after 10 years at the helm I would hope to have it better than it is. In fairness to Simon, he did say "just ask if there's any problems".

Some of the lows.....
Luke warm water out of the bathroom sink - shower was OK.
Toilet cistern that took far too long to fill.
Noisy en-suite fan
Paintwork chipped and/or flaking.
Very soft mattress - was it just soft or too old?
Loose fixtures and fittings (vanity shelf over sink for example)
Dusty picture frames etc.

Breakfast is served from 9am. You place your order for Sausage / Egg & Bacon then, when the plate arrived you helped yourself to Beans / Mushrooms / Tomato / Hash Browns. We were second to get breakfast and found that these "help yourself" items were already running out. The staff never checked to see if there was sufficient items. Even when told "there's no hash browns" they never checked to see if the beans etc were still OK.

However the breakfast was good and we enjoyed it.

We have stayed in many establishments in Blackpool - some absolutely atrocious some fantastic. The New Guilderoy falls somewhere in the middle. It's definately not a 5 out of 5 establishment. In my view they put you on a "guilt trip" and coerce you to rate it this high.

After ten years it should be better than it is. Admittedly some major projects require lots of money and can't be done maybe as quickly as they would like but it costs almost nothing to touch up the rust patch and missing paint on the radiator and put new screws in the vanity shelf.

It's the attention to detail that let's this place down and when you see that they a the 3rd best hotel in Blackpool you really do expect something better.

To me, Rhona and Simon have one aim - to be the rated the number one hotel in Blackpool - even if their premises fail to meet these ratings. My big question is "If enough people give they 5 out 5 and they become No. 1, how many more years do they need to make it really good"?

Thank you for giving us another chance to review us, albeit you did choose a £29.50 break with breakfast in a 'warm' refurbished room. I hasten to add, that's £29.50 for the couple, exclusive of steps to check the top of the picture frames. Hence, bargain hotel of the year 2014, thank you Tripadvisor! It's a pity you couldn't have given us notice of your impending visit as it would have saved us £780 for our AA 2 star small hotel surprise visit that we received just a few days later which concludes 'this was a positive visit.....further gradual improvements...enhanced quality...Housekeeping was again noted to be of a high standard in all areas of the property with bathrooms and bedrooms of particular note neatly presented, fresh, dust free and all contact surfaces scrupulously clean, The New Guilderoy Hotel continues to achieve a Two Star 'Small Hotel' grading with an overall AA Merit Score of 78%'! Stop watching four in a bed and concentrate on 'real' holidays. Please don't come back! Do you not think we have finished other rooms that are worth more?

Me and my partner booked this hotel at very short notice, when we arrived we were greeted by Simon who was very polite and full of information about places to go and how to get there. He informed us of the complimentary buffet that evening and the bar opening times. We were then shown to our room which was the London Underground (23), the room was not large but very cosy, clean, well equipped and stylish. everything worked as it should after a good night out and decent night sleep and a great shower we hit the dinning room for breakfast where Rhona greeted us with a fabulous selection of fresh fruit, cereals along with cheese and ham, coffee tea and selection fresh fruit juice. We were asked for our order for our full English breakfast. Which was bloody good breakfast if I say so myself.
As for reading some of these negative comments on here I don't not know what kind of world you guys live in, but pound for pound this place can not be beaten, we have stopped in places which have cost 4 times more than this place and not go no where near the kind of service we received from Simon and Rhona.
Needless to say we have no hesitation in coming back and intend to do so when we come to see a show in the autumn.
Many thanks to Simon and Rhona for our wonderful bank holiday weekend.... Jemma and Dean

Had the pleasure of staying at this hotel over the Easter Weekend, with my partner, my sister in law and brother in law and everything was perfect. Found the hotel through trip advisor and booked it on the strength of the reviews I read. It was fantastic, Simon and his wife Rhona did everything they could to make this a perfect stay, they were really friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The breakfast was fantastic and the quality and quantity of food was incredible. The choice of bar meals was great and really good value. Thank you Simon and Rhona for being perfect hosts...........Would we stay there again........You bet your sweet bippy we would. Already saving to plan another stay. First class five star treatment all the way.
Hope to se you soon.

Thanks for a great review. I think you have summed us up accurately. We were a B&B that asked for AA Hotel accreditation and we were so proud to get AA 2* Small Hotel accreditation last year, and we've now been reviewed again and the AA have noted improvements. Great comments from a senior reviewer, it means so much to us.
