Big Blue Hotel
Ranked #7 of 73 Hotels in Blackpool
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 22, 2013

The Big Blue is an excellent hotel in every way – location, room quality, restaurant, service – and the ideal base for a weekend in Blackpool, particularly if this is intended to include the Pleasure Beach (adjacent to the hotel) or the Sandcastle indoor waterpark.

It is also remarkably easy to find, being a few yards from the promenade at the foot of the Big One’s steep climb and hence almost impossible to miss. If arriving early, it may be possible to park here free of charge and go elsewhere before checking-in – just check with the hotel as a courtesy – which is obviously convenient. On the day of departure, there is complimentary parking until 1pm which again is very convenient.

Continuing the theme of convenience, the hotel has its own gate into the Pleasure Beach and will provide a free “pleasurebeachpass” to guests staying in the hotel who have not pre-booked a wristband; the pass allows free entry to the grounds of the Pleasure Beach but rides would be payable at one of the kiosks dotted around. Free Wifi is also available throughout the hotel – guests simply need to register and create an account.

We stayed in a Deluxe Family Room which had a great view of the Steeplechase, the Big One and the Big Dipper. This room would easily cater for two adults (in a large double bed) and two teenagers (in full sized bunk beds with their own tv screen and built-in PS3 games console).

The bunk beds are in an alcove by the entrance door so out of sight from the main room which itself has a flatscreen tv with Freeview, a desk area plus sofa, plenty of storage space, tea / coffee making facilities, an ironing board and a climate control system. The smart modern bathroom lies between the two areas.

The restaurant and bar area are modern and service levels are very good. The evening menu includes full a la carte or table d’hote options and there is a good wine list. This could well be the best restaurant in Blackpool so another good reason to consider staying here. Breakfast is buffet – hot and cold food, juices, cereals – and we liked the microwave (not needed but a very good idea) plus the do-it-yourself tea, coffee and toast (no need to wait). Young guests staying here will also be surprised during their breakfast by a visit from one or two large but cuddly characters associated with the Pleasure Beach.

This was our second stay at the Big Blue and we heartily recommend it to people wanting to visit the attractions Blackpool has to offer.

Lovely hotel. Room overlooking the rollercoasters at the Pleasure Beach was very comfortable. Staff very pleasant on check-in. The only downside was the waitress in the restaurant at breakfast. We arrived in the restaurant and there was no-one to greet us or show us to a table but we could hear them having a conversation, out of our sight, about dreams. Everything in the restaurant is self service, including the drinks. We had not finished our toast but the waitress came to our table and whipped away our side plates and then, while I was still eating, came back and took my breakfast plate. No "Excuse me, have you finished with this?" Definitely NOT a casual, laid back breakfast.

Stayed here in a superior family room with separate bunk area for kids. Hotel is clean and friendly although felt restaurant was a little overpriced for what you got although of a good quality. Right next to the pleasure beach you could see the roller coaster from our bedroom window which was only metres away. Free parking and wifi here also. All in all good stay but only gripe is the bunks are small and was a bit tight for our daughter to lie in. Would use again though.

Booked and stayed in this fabulous hotel, as we were on our first trip to visit Blackpool and Pleasure Beach Resort. And I am amazed with the setting of the room, just big enough for a family of 5. The staff were all so helpful and accommodating. The price that came with a package of entry to the resort is very reasonable and you can even have early access to the resort which is plus! We also had the best sleep of all hotel beds. Our room also has 3 televisions. Food is also excellent, we had our breakfast on their lovely restaurant, which comes with the price. I can't think of any turn down from this hotel; highly recommendable. Walking distance to beach and Blackpool Tower. Will come back!!!

Room Tip: We stayed on the 4th floor, no noise so far even if it faces the road.

Third time here, last time 2012 for our wedding anniversary.

As before, great staff, location, comfort.

We had 3 rooms this time (two for teenage children and partners were upgraded, without us asking, to Executive rooms and our Suite was even better than last time) and all our requests (high floor, theme park view, quiet location, near together) were met.

Bar/restaurant staff very good, nice food, reasonable prices.

Can't wait for our next visit.

Room Tip: High floor, theme park view.
