The Big Blue is an excellent hotel in every way – location, room quality, restaurant, service – and the ideal base for a weekend in Blackpool, particularly if this is intended to include the Pleasure Beach (adjacent to the hotel) or the Sandcastle indoor waterpark.
It is also remarkably easy to find, being a few yards from the promenade at the foot of the Big One’s steep climb and hence almost impossible to miss. If arriving early, it may be possible to park here free of charge and go elsewhere before checking-in – just check with the hotel as a courtesy – which is obviously convenient. On the day of departure, there is complimentary parking until 1pm which again is very convenient.
Continuing the theme of convenience, the hotel has its own gate into the Pleasure Beach and will provide a free “pleasurebeachpass” to guests staying in the hotel who have not pre-booked a wristband; the pass allows free entry to the grounds of the Pleasure Beach but rides would be payable at one of the kiosks dotted around. Free Wifi is also available throughout the hotel – guests simply need to register and create an account.
We stayed in a Deluxe Family Room which had a great view of the Steeplechase, the Big One and the Big Dipper. This room would easily cater for two adults (in a large double bed) and two teenagers (in full sized bunk beds with their own tv screen and built-in PS3 games console).
The bunk beds are in an alcove by the entrance door so out of sight from the main room which itself has a flatscreen tv with Freeview, a desk area plus sofa, plenty of storage space, tea / coffee making facilities, an ironing board and a climate control system. The smart modern bathroom lies between the two areas.
The restaurant and bar area are modern and service levels are very good. The evening menu includes full a la carte or table d’hote options and there is a good wine list. This could well be the best restaurant in Blackpool so another good reason to consider staying here. Breakfast is buffet – hot and cold food, juices, cereals – and we liked the microwave (not needed but a very good idea) plus the do-it-yourself tea, coffee and toast (no need to wait). Young guests staying here will also be surprised during their breakfast by a visit from one or two large but cuddly characters associated with the Pleasure Beach.
This was our second stay at the Big Blue and we heartily recommend it to people wanting to visit the attractions Blackpool has to offer.
