“Stay at Elgin Hotel for Illuminations”
Reviewed December 11, 2012

Booked the hotel with Edwards Coaches, as no other coach trip was going during the half term in November. Also it was advertised as a Turkey and Tinsel break which I fancied as I was going only with my son and thought It would be fun. However a week before we went I was informed the hotel had cancelled the T & T theme, which I was not very amused with! The trip was fairly expensive also.
The downstairs of the hotel is decorated nicely, dining room, reception , bars etc. We had a twin room which we were not too impressed with, small but cleanish, bedding clean. My eight year old was not too impressed! Tv was a flat screen. Bathroom needed modernisation , there was tissue paper stuffed in a hole of the surround of the wooden window, where there was a gap! I spoke to a family of three on the same coach as us and they had an updated modern bedroom which was huge with a view of the sea. We had paid the same amount and felt disgruntled about this!
Blackpool was fantastic, a million things to do, so we were kept busy!
The dining room was busy in the evening and we were kept waiting for quite some time between courses, the staff were rushed off their feet . Food good, but not enough of it. Luckily my husband wasn't with us or he would be starving! Our waiter went on the sick on the last night, I'm not surprised, he had had enough with the rushing about all the time!
We didn't really experience the entertainment we were out most nights, but the entertainers seemed happy and friendly. Female Older bar staff, very miserable!
If we return to Blackpool,we will try another hotel, generally not impressed at all!

Room Tip: Ask for an updated modern room with a sea view

Dear ‘Starlene’
I’m sorry to read that we did not meet your expectations on your recent stay with us.
The holiday was originally going to be a Turkey and Tinsel Break but when we realised that many Children were still on half term we altered the itinerary. We did inform Edwards Coaches of this several months prior to your arrival. Having spoken to Edwards this morning, they assure me that you were written to on the 31st August with an explanation of the situation. I believe their telesales girl also rang you offering you an alternative holiday or a refund. Our Turkey and Tinsel tends to be most popular with the more elderly clientele and the idea of having a lot of children running between the legs of ‘re-cycled teenagers’ might not be the best of ideas!
I’m not aware of any paper being stuffed in a window casing. We do still have the odd sache window – it is possible that another guest had stuffed paper in a gap and we have failed to pick up on it. I have asked Housekeeping to check the room and if still present to remove this. We are carrying out several more renovations this winter – hopefully the new windows we have ordered will take care of this situation.
With regards to your bedroom, I do know that it can be a bit galling when finding someone who has paid the same fare as yourself getting a superior room. It could be that your friends paid for an upgrade.
I’m sorry that our meal service was not quick enough for you. We do allow an hour (60 minutes) to serve our 4 course dinner. Most people find this quite acceptable but I appreciate with a younger child this might be too long. I dare say we could have made arrangements for a quicker meal for your son if we had been asked at the time. Our portion sizes are too large for some guests and too small for others – we encourage guests to let us know if they would like a larger or smaller portion so we can adjust accordingly. Naturally I’m pleased you enjoyed the quality of our food.
I’m surprised that you found one of our team being ‘very miserable’ as our customer feedback tends to be very positive with regards to our friendly staff. However, I will mention this to our Bars Manager and make sure that this is not a regular occurrence.
I’m genuinely delighted to hear that you enjoyed your time in Blackpool. The town has undergone many improvements over the last few years, not least Blackpool Tower (which is still being renovated as I write) and the new Tramway. I’m sorry that you didn’t mention any of your observations about the hotel to me when you were here, I’m sure these issues could have been resolved. If you do consider coming back to us, maybe give me a ring at time of booking and hopefully we’ll be able to give you a stay that fully meets your requirements.
Yours Sincerely
Nigel Seddon

We have just returned from a Comedy Weekend at the Elgin. A party of 4, and we can honestly say we haven't laughed as much for ages, our sides hurt. This is a lovely hotel with fantastic staff-all very polite and efficient. We were so suprised to find our room cleaned an tidied whilest we were at breakfast-brilliant.Thank you to all at the Elgin for a superb weekend.
ps The fish dishes are cooked perfect, our compliments to the chef.

Room Tip: we had room 336-just a tad small for our liking so we will go for one of the larger rooms next time...

Thanks Janette – you’re observations are very much appreciated. Good to know that you enjoyed your weekend and not least the side-splitting Comedy. We have plenty more of these lined up for you next year!

We drove down Sunday morning and we were a bit frazzled when we got there. The hotel seemed to wrap itself around us and made us feel right at home! The reception staff were pleasant and efficient and checked us in in no time. The bedrooms were immaculate, as were the ensuite bathrooms. We could find nothing to upset the nice feeling the staff had created. The lounges, bar and dining room were of a similar standard, and the food was delicious. We only stayed 1 night but we are definitely going back. The only reason we did not give 5 stars was that the lift was a bit old and the idiot in the next room was a noisy prat and we had to go down to reception to get him shut up as there are no telephones in the bedrooms.A small but important inconvenience.

Many thanks for the feedback Shelnor. Really pleased that you enjoyed your stay and the entertainment. We have replaced one of our passenger lifts and a second is on our ‘wish-list’ – it could be a year or two!

Have a great Christmas and hopefully see you in the New Year.

Best Wishes

This was about our 7th year at the Elgin. Originally started with Murder/Mystery, then couple of 60s weekends. Rock'n Roll not exactly our cup of tea but entertaining. Ricky Aron and Vince really good acts, pity there was a 'Numpty' staying who was'nt impressed with the Elgin and went around telling everyone, why he did not leave we'll never know! he did'nt spoil our enjoyment anyway. Might try 'Comedy' weekend next year. Rooms/facilites really good and cannot fault food, excellent.
