“Disappointing Christmas, but (most) staff did their best”
Reviewed December 30, 2012

Following a family bereavement this year, the family decided to spend Christmas at the Norbreck, where we had stayed in the summer in a disappointingly small but OK room.

First let-down - we had to queue for over an hour to check in on arrival,
Second let-down - TINY lift to cover 5 floors in the Balmoral Tower
Third let-down - Bathroom looked as if it had ha no maintenance for years, with a fixed shower head meaning anyone over about 5'4" had to bend at an awkward angle to be able to wash their hair.
Fourth let-down - whilst the room had double-glazing, the maintenance of these was such that they rattled and whistled non-stop
Fifth let-down - there was a relatively full programme of events, and on Christmas Eve the children's entertainment was advertised at 5pm. We planned our day around this, coming back to the hotel with plenty time to get ready and let my child have a nap beforehand.

We arrived at the venue with no sign of entertainment, along with a couple of other families. After much debating and asking of staff, we were told that there had been a misprint and it was actually at 8pm.

This is a mistake which can happen, I accept that. However, there had been no attempt to notify people - a simple printing of a few sheets of A4 paper with a note to parents and placed in obvious places would have been sufficient - yes? Apparently not, according to a Stuart Deaville (Duty Manager) When I complained about the time being wrong, I was told "we can change it if we want to" and when I asked why there had been no attempt at informing people - suggesting the above - I got a condescending smile and a "no", accompanied with a "how could we tell you if you were at the pleasure beach".

Having worked in hospitality for many years, I was gobsmacked at this and had to walk away.

The rest of the staff we came across during our stay could not have been more helpful, it's a shame that someone in his position was the one to let everyone down.

We have stayed here a few times before so not expecting a great deal from this hotel but normally it fulfils its function. This time was different, got there before 3 so had to wait to check in with other functions that were on.Sorted out fairly quickly.
Asked to get high floor so as not to be disturbed by kids upstairs, got 5th floor in Balmoral block but as there is only one lift for about 100 rooms queueing was order of day if lift was working.
Bedroom had a bed and bathroom had a bath so description did not contravene trades description act but dirty carpet and curtains and uncomfortable old bed not really acceptable.Difficult to describe bathroom but lets just say plenty of hot water for shower.
Our room was next door to a family room with three noisy kids (sounded like 13 )and a mum shouting at them meant that apart from the uncomfortable bed we had little sleep, sounded like they were all in our bathroom. Why when you are with an older party do they put you next to a young family.
Which takes us to the dining room, this was in Norcalympia a massive room like an enormous canteen with about 85 tables of 10 people.Queues for food every morning and night and well food was as bad as any hotel I ever stayed in,very limited selection and poor quality, some often almost cold when you got it.At least Rennie had a good week.We were told to sit at same place but some other people sat on our table so when we got there our place had been used already.
On the plus side the staff were great doing a very difficult job.
The ballroom is very nice and the dance host was excellent.
What you see is what you get here its tatty all over could do with a complete refurbishment.I think you might say its cheap and cheerful, clean towells every day and staff doing a good job in difficult circumstances.

I'd like to start off by saying I got this on a very cheap deal so I wasn't expecting much but what. I got was unlike anything I've experienced before. Driving up to the hotel it is this huge imposing building- painted yellow in a once was white kind of way.filthy dirty looking and in desperate need to TLC. Large car park, lots of spaces although many filled with coaches as this hotel is one which offers turkey and tinsel style breaks. Queued for reception in a clothes shop queue style fashion and was serviced by a flustered woman who complained that people kept interrupting her and asking for help. Was given room 333 and after waiting 12 minutes for the lift, our key didn't work in the door. Room very small and basic. Literally only place you'd want to sleep, not spend any other time in. Tv had 3 channels, tea and coffee making facilities although I'd take your own as the brands were unheard of and I'm not surprised given that they tasted terrible. Most uncomfortable nights sleep ive had since i was teething as a child- bed lumpy as though lying on a pebble beach and the bed linen stank. bathroom pretty clean but very hospital like in appearance. Pool, sauna and jacuzzi all very lovely and the saving grace of the hotel. These were great and if you can get past everything else that's awful about the hotel then these are worth paying a visit to. Don't bother with the breakfast, it was served in what can only be described as an airy school sports hall, packed to the rafters and felt more like a night out than an early morning breakfast.queued for over 15 mins to get our buffet breakfast which I'm sorry to say was the most disgusting food I've ever had and as a bigger woman ill usually eat anything! The lady food made me feel sick to the stomach and laden with indigestion all day so id really say avoid it.if you are just looking for something very cheap to rest your head for a night then I'd say go for it, otherwise avoid like the plague.

My room was ok,I cleaned the television before I left it was thick with dust. Bed was clean and comfortable, bathroom was ok and room ok needed furniture updating and a good clean but was ok for the night. Food was lovely but wouldn't want to stay for a week because the hotel was in such a run down state and staff looked miserable as sin in the dining area and unhelpful to say the least.

I have stayed in this Hotel a number of times, I have found the staff on good form. However when people winge at them they switch off. Come on staff just smile and think your only here for a few days I live and work here, then be pleasant to others. In general people are on holiday make it pleasant others do it for you when your away.

Stayed overnight, enjoyable stay. Rooms clean and comfortable and good entertainment. Would recommend. Only issue is it is quite a walk from places so I would stay more central if unable to walk distance . Breakfast was nice too.
