“Cabaret weekend”
Reviewed January 15, 2012

Friday 13th-Sunday 15th January 2012. For 79 quid for dinner b&b, 4 drinks vouchers each person, each night and 2 very good tribute acts, you cannot expect 5 star hotel or gourmet food. The place needs a refurb no doubt about it but the bed linen was spotless. Our room was adequate but the bathroom had no radiator and very cold. Food both nights was good, yes it was a bit of a bun fight with the buffet business but we got a table instantly both nights and it was laid with clean plates, cutlery etc. Brekkie was just ok, do yourself a favour, have juice, cereal or fruit then get a pile of bacon on 2 slices of buttered toast and have a buttie. The sausages were poor and the "egg" was made of some re-constituted stuff. Overall, we thought for the money, it was great value. The acts were excellent.

I was b and b the breakfast wasn't to bad . And it says it has a gym but you have to pay to get inside there . The evening meal to closed so early the stuff was rude to wasn't very helpful they was more interested in going home never go back again I tell you that .

Went on an overnight stay all inclusive Abba caberet night.
Firstly the hotel itself is way too large, The lift (which we found one of) is not sufficient for the hotel size. The room was very basic but clean and comfortable. The evening meal was a complete shambles, You are directed to a table and just left to figure out how the system works, the food is self service and below average, another reviewer used the phrase school canteen, well it is worse than that even. My friend was ill later in the evening I am not sure if it was the meal but it's not exactly the most hygenic of restaurants I have seen.
The caberet night and free bar was just a free for all, 1 drink per customer so dont dare ask for a white wine and lemonade as that was classed as 2 drinks but I refused to queue another 40 minutes for a glass of lemonade.
My friend and i decided to sit in the bar to pay for our own drinks which was far more relaxing and very nice surroundings.
The caberet was rubbish, Abba tribute act cam on very late in the evening for 1 hour and looked bored up on the stage.
Dont think I will bother returning

I like many others were recently on an all inclusive (3 hr free bar) break a the Norbreck Castle Hotel. Pros Rooms were clean enough. Good bathroom facilities.
Cons Dining area at 7pm was often like a school canteen. Hard to find table
lack of attention from waiting staff and no clean cutlery. Self Service
meant exactly that. Find your own cutlery. Find chef to order food that
should be attended to by the waiter/waitress. Clear away your own
tables.

Did we enjoy our holiday.... yes but this was no thanks to the Norbreck Hotel.

On the sore point of the free bar I was advised by Caledonian Travel the night before that the hotel had removed this facility but all would be explained by them on arrival at reception. By notices/boards etc. Notices were up when we arrived but disappeared the next day. We were given a notice saying the free bar had been removed due to chages in local legislation.

I cannot find any record of any such legislation. Staff at the hotel gave 3 different versions of why the free bar was removed. The police said it/ a judge said it and the local legislation which had come into force. I queried this with a manager. When and where was this legislation made. Give my a reference number so I can check it out. No info was forthcoming. The best one of all was when the manager said it had all come about when another hotel (not the Norbreck of course) had been mentioned in a court case where the defendant had blamed the free bar. The judge advised removal of such facilities. Britannia had acted on this to stop binge drinking. Still does not appear to me to be legislation.

Also binge drinking does not just happen at free bars. It seems You can get just as drunk as you want but you need to pay for it.

I would like to know the real story behind this. The only people who missed out were the guests. We did not get the free bar but the Norbreck obviously made more money than they would have normally by selling alcohol during the free bar period.

My hubby and I stayed here from 6th - 8th January, we had been looking forward to an inexpensive break after all the expenses over the Christmas period. Being advertised as a FREE three hour bar each evening we thought our spending would be of a minimum, wrong, the free bar was withdrawn and four vouchers per person issued. My husband went to the manager to complain and was fobbed off with the explanation that "new legislation had been introduced, therefore the hotel could no longer offer a free bar", rubbish, we found out that it was the hotel group themselves that had made the decision. I can only say that there were a lot of unhappy and disappointed people, their weekend being ruined. We certainly will never return.

Just returned from 3 day break with National Holidays. As mentioned in other reviews the free bar was not available which caused an understandable amount of discontent from all the people who were sold the holiday to include it. I think the best way to deal with this is to put it in writing to the tour company and see what there response is.We were given a voucher for 4 drinks per person per night.
The hotel itself was what was expected having read the numerous other reviews. In need of decorating and updating. Our room was acceptable overall, with sufficent clean towels and plenty of hot water. The bed was quite lumpy. We were on the fourth floor at the back and the room was warm with no heating on ( maybe because we were over the kitchens).
The food was fine and all that we expected for the very low price we payed (£76. per person).
Both the tribute bands, Beatles and Abba were excellent and there was a good atmosphere in the entertainment room and a chance to have a dance. Also the singing and dancing group were good on both nights. There was the usual game of bingo but many enjoyed it and it did not last for long.
Reception and bar staff pleasent as were the dining room staff.
Overall we could have no complaints for the money we payed and would return. We primarily went for the entertainment as we like 60/70s music.
