Lovely, quiet hotel situated between ambleside and bowness(20 mins and 40 mins walk respectively) just off the main lake road.with ample parking and well kept grounds surrounded by trees.my wife and i arrived just after our reception to a rather bland reception at the hotel (not told what to do,apart from meal times) and given our keys to our room (no 19).Room was nicely decorated,10ft by 9ft roughly, with telephone, and very nice bathroom and bath/shower.although view from window was just a wall and ivy.the bed was 2 single beds pushed together with clean, comfortable linen.Tv was small 15-17" with limited freeview channels (15-20,mostly due to location) and same for internet (slow speed, frequent disconnects).carpets are in need of replacing, noticable wear.
Food is excellent! a big thank you chef! we loved the cream bee next to the sticky toffee pudding, very creative!
room cleaners-thankyou,brilliant job! (remember to set your door tags visitors or they clean for the fun of it!)
seeing or contacting staff does seem to be difficult (ie.well after dinner) when they are not performing set routines.
guests in hotel were 40's-60's of age about 10 in total.
all in all,for the price we paid it was ok.But at full price we doubt we would do this again.just an ok hotel-a little more work and this would be a gem.

Room Tip: gardens are on the right hand side of the property.

I stayed there when I was taking part of the trail running training weekend as well as the ultra trail marathon 100k. Although I was in and out of the odd and unsociable hours, the staff was very flexible in accommodating these. The meal was fantastic and the service was quick. Their service and extra little help in getting taxis etc made my stay very comfortable and hustle free. I will stay again for the next year when I am up in the Lakes for the same event.

My son and I stayed for three days at the end of August for a brief walking holiday. We had adjacent 'single' rooms which were actually doubles at excellent prices. Both rooms were clean, bright and pleasant, and the en-suite bathrooms were smart, modern and absolutely spotless. I had been a little concerned before our arrival about the proclaimed 'pet-friendliness' of the hotel and any resulting 'wet dog' smell or hairs in the rooms, but I needn't have worried as there was not a hint of this. The staff we encountered were, without exception, friendly, helpful and efficient. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and intend to return.

Two criticisms only, one trivial, the other not quite so. Firstly, in the midst of a generally excellent full English breakfast, how is it possible to produce such appalling scrambled egg? Thin, watery and tasteless, it didn't change for three days, so we have to assume it was intended to be like that - take my advice and go for fried, poached or boiled instead!

On a more serious note, whilst the location of the hotel is excellent, close to the lake and only a couple of miles from Ambleside, walking anywhere from the hotel is something of a nightmare. This is because you are obliged to walk along the main A591 to get anywhere and the combination of narrow road, scarce pavements and fast traffic (which you can't see coming until it's right on top of you) means that you take your life in your hands every time you go out - something to consider before booking the Briery Wood as a walking base.

As you get more mature it's difficult to find an acceptable birthday present so I was delighted when my wife decided to take me to the Briery Wood for an overnight stay to celebrate my ** birthday. I must say that she made a good decision.

We arrived friday afternoon, adequate parking, and reception was excellent. Found our room easily and nice to discover that we had a well proportioned bathroom. Not large but certainly better than the rabbit hutches you occasionally find attached to your bedroom. Really nice, thick and fluffy towels. Comfortable bed and nice to be able to sleep with the window open without any adverse effects.

The only criticism would be about the choices of main course on the dinner menu. A little more variety of choice would have appreciated.
Starter and dessert choices
were fine.

Nice and relaxed start to the day. Choices and service at breakfast were excellent.

For anyone wanting to spend 2 or 3 days in the lakes this hotel would make a good base.

My partner and I stayed at the briery wood hotel towards the end of august for two nights. On arrival we checked in and was shown to our room which was room (one) the room could not be faulted it was spotless. The bed was massive and bedding was like new, the bathroom was extremely clean not a thing out of place. There is a tv and internet available and tea and coffee making facilities, the room was very comfortable. A patio door opened onto a small courtyard where you could sit in the lovely well kept gardens. The evening menu we found to be quite small and limited however the food was good the breakfast was excellent with a good selection on offer, the bar at night was left unattended so you had to ring a bell if you wanted a drink so this area lacked atmosphere. the carpets in the main area's are threadbare in places and in need of replacing which when compared to the rest of the hotel don't make sense so I think maybe the new owners are going to renew the carpets, however this is only our opinion this hotel is well worth a visit and we will return for another stay.

Room Tip: room one opens onto a small patio area and garden with table and chairs

We stayed here on a Travelzoo deal including dinner, bed and breakfast. This was excellent value. The room was fantastic, spotlessly clean with doors leading out to the patio and garden. It also had a great location just outside Windermere and within walking distance of Brockhole where we got a lake cruise to Bowness, Ambleside and Wray Castle. The evening meal was excellent as was the breakfast. Unfortunately there was a small issue with the service. After finishing the main course we told the waiter we were popping out quickly leaving 2 full glasses of wine. On return the wine glasses were gone though the rest of the bottle remained. We did explain to the waiter who offered us 2 glasses of house wine as replacement which was not what we were drinking. To be fair it appeared that we were given a reduction on the bill so I cannot fault that however we seemed to be ignored at breakfast by the waitress involved and another waitress was quite apologetic to us. There was also very little atmosphere there but that could be down to it being end of season so we spent our time in the luxurious room rather than the bar.

Room Tip: Room 2 was superb.

I stayed here for a couple of nights recently. The location of the hotel (approximately 3 miles from Windermere on the road to Ambleside) is very good if you want to be away from the crowds. The hotel is approached up a private drive and is just far enough from the road to escape the noise of passing traffic. My room (9) was one of the smallest but was still adequate and nicely furnished. This is a very small hotel with a very homely feel, similar to a good quality B&B. The restaurant is pleasant enough. There is a set menu which appears to change daily (£30 for three courses including coffee) with about half a dozen choices at each course. The quality of the food is very good although portion sizes are tad small. If you are on a business trip, one thing to be aware of is that breakfast does not officially start until 8.30am (although they do not appear to mind you making a start from the buffet table a bit sooner).
I enjoyed my stay here. If your preference is for a small, quality hotel in a quiet location at a reasonable price it is just the job.
