Used a Groupon voucher to book a 2 night stay and upgraded from a cosy double to a lake view room. So glad we did as the room was lovely, with a fantastic view of the garden, lake and surrounding hills. Cleanliness immaculate with a Jacuzzi bath to lunge in. Great little touches such as bottles of water as well as hot drinks facility. White bath products which smelt gorgeous. Had meal with first night - supposed to be 4 courses, but felt more as they brought nibbles and bread before the meal was served and coffee came with chocolate. Breakfast was also good with a great choice. Also given tea and cream scone on one day - delicous. Good job we did a lot of walking to exercise after all that food. Had a swim in the small pool and relaxed in the sauna. Altogether a fantastic few days and will visit again.

Room Tip: The hotel is at the top of a hill, so be prepared for a short, sharp hill at the end of the day. Onl...

We booked direct with the hotel after receiving a groupon deal and the hotel offered us the same deal, two nights B&B, afternoon tea ( scone, cream and jam,pot of tea ) and dinner on the first night - two people £239.00
Our accommodation was lovely, spotlessly clean,we had a balcony and believe the room had been very recently refurbished, the staff had a lot to polish as mirrored furniture and chrome were the order of the day! There were people staying in the room above us and due to the acoustics/floorboards we did hear them on occasion, but it did not affect our stay. We were in the annexe - separate to the main building, accessed via a covered walkway, beautiful flowers and shrubs along the way, there are quite a few steps,so the annexe would not suit those with mobility concerns. The Hotel is a strict non smoking facility so we did encounter guests smoking on the path....
The sauna was relaxing, with a shower, the steam room was not available, the pool was very nice too.
The young staff of The Hotel are a credit, the staff we encountered we're very pleasant, polite and courteous, they appeared to enjoy their roles.
Guests are allocated a table which does not change for breakfast and dinner, previous reviewers have mentioned not having a window seat, we didn't, but could still see the landscape, and actually the couple who did sit in the bay window spent some time fiddleing with the drapes as the sun was either too high or too low for their liking (irrespective of other diners ). The food is very well presented and delicious,I believe there are three chefs with different specialitys, breakfast, dinner, desserts. The staff are very accommodating,if you don't like tomatoes for example, you can request extra black pudding instead. The Hotel dining is for guests only, so service is laid back, you're not rushed, tables are not quickly reset as there is no need to get ready for the next person as of course the tables are already allocated.Expect dinner to take 2hours + from start to finish, not a problem for us at all,we enjoyed eating leisurely. Breakfast is quicker and very enjoyable. We loved our stay,we cannot comment on the bedrooms in the hotel as we did not see them, the superior balcony annexe room was lovely and we would stay there again.Very comfortable bed/pillows with soft linens, modern decor, beautiful bathroom with shower and freestanding bath and TV!

Room Tip: Longish walk and steps to the annexe rooms - worth the distance if want the superior balcony room ov...

Thank you for your lovely review. We are so pleased that you enjoyed our newly refurbished room in the Tendal Howe building. There is a smoking area on the terrace for guests who wish to smoke so we are sorry that you encountered other guests smoking on the walkway to the building. We cater for non-residents in the dining room also but prefer to do one sitting as we like our guests to feel relaxed...after all you are on holiday. I hope you come and visit us again soon. Keep an eye on our website for some more great offers.

The hotel entrance sign is not at car level so look up when driving up Thornbarrow Road, it feels like you are driving into someone's private drive but it is the way to the hotel. Both receptionists we came across were very helpful and knowledgeable.
The bedroom was a lovely size, with nice bedding and a couple of bottles of water for the non tea and coffee drinkers amongst us. Plenty of hangers in the wardrobe and lots of towels (including 2 face towels).
Our only disappointment was with the restaurant. The restaurant has some stunning views and everyone likes a table with a view? On entering the restaurant we asked for a table with a window seat but we were told that you had to reserve those, so were sat at a table at the back of the room. There was a window table available that had been obviously used but had not been relaid. It remained this way through our evening meal, which was frustrating. For breakfast you have to sit at the table you used for dinner. Again the same window table had been used but didn't get relaid through the breakfast service. The service very friendly and helpful, though slow, however the most important thing, the food, was lovely. The hotel is well situated to walk to both Windermere and Bowness.

Thank you for your lovely review and we are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us. You will be pleased to know that we have changed the restaurant tables slightly and have introduced a new system to accommodate the very high demand for window tables. Not all tables in the main restaurant have a view of the lake but nearly all of them offer lovely views towards the Langdales and the surrounding landscape. We look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Superb situation with stunning views, excellent dining experience though could have done with a change of main course the second night,we were told this never changes,as most people only stay 2 nights.
Bedrooms were very comfortable ,had to make a point about plugs being situated too far away from hairdryer ,this needs to be looked in room 4 .
Staff all very helpfull.

Thank you for your excellent review. We will certainly look at the plugs in Room 4 and maybe alter them when we come to refurbish that room later in the year. The staff appreciate your comments and we hope to see you again soon.

We felt so relaxed after our visit there. The food was delicious and the ambiance delightful. Accommodation was lovely and the service was good. Highly recommended. The weather was lovely so we sat outside on the terrace and admired the view. The only downside was the seep hill up to the hotel which my husband could not manage to walk but we just drove down to Bowness and back. Take your swimming costume as the pool is nice and quiet!

The hotel was set high up in superb surroundings with a dining room that has stunning views overlooking lake windermere.i can say hand on heart the food was amazing(im sure they had gordon ramsey chained to the stove in the kitchen), every single member off staff deserve a huge pat on the back, nothing was to much for them. our room was in the annexe which was superb, clean, and a bed that could off slept 4ppl easily.
I must say that this old fashioned warm charming hotel scores a massive 10/10
Our group off 6 were sad to leave after a wonderful 2 night stop with yourselfs but glad to say we will all be returning later this year. ps choose room 1 if you can. mal and jas

Room Tip: try and get room in the annexe if possible

Wow! What a title and thank you for your great comments. All the credit for the food goes to our Head Chef, Phillip (who is a lot more polite than Gordon Ramsey) and he takes great pride in producing some outstanding dishes. We look forward to welcoming you back to Hillthwaite in the near future.
