“My Travelzoo Voucher Experience”
Reviewed March 29, 2013

The Hillthwaite Hotel is a traditional English Country Hotel. The welcome at the hotel was helpful and informative. We were surprised at how busy the restaurant was. However the surprise was short lived once we had tucked into our starters. Excellent cuisine! From the roasted quail to the banana parfait, clearly a technically gifted chef. Breakfast delivered fresh local produce to the highest standard. We would have been pleased to pay the voucher price for DB&B just for this restaurant experience.
If you are looking for a week end break in the Lakes you will be hard pushed to discover better value and location over the Hillthwaite Hotel. This is not a sterile Premier Inn TravelLodge where am I tonight venue but a down to earth clean and friendly nice place.

Thank you for your review, I am so pleased that you felt your Travel Zoo package was value for money, Your kind comments have been passed onto the Chef and his team and they were very much appreciated. We do try and retain as much individuality as we can in order to set us apart from the Corporate organisations who, whilst providing an excellent and consistent product do lack a little in charisma! I look forward to hopefully welcoming you back to the Hillthwaite on some future visit. Thank you.

Stayed at the Hillthwaite hotel for 2 nights was a lovely hotel, nice staff, the only downfall was the pool, it looked lovely on the photograph but when you got in there was no were to swim as the edges were bevelled and I kept banging my legs on the incline, was very small swimming area and not disabled friendly no bars to help you in or out of the water. But the hotel and food was very nice.

My husband booked this 2 night B&B break several months ahead, having seen it advertised through a Daily Telegraph offer. At the time of booking he arranged to pay extra for a lake / fell facing room. We stayed in Room 11 - first on the left at the top of the stairs. Great views of a bit of Windermere, and the Langdale Pikes, most of this disappeared on Day 2 when the weather closed in, snow fell, and visibility was much reduced.

The room was spacious and comfortable, with plenty of hanging space, a good bathroom and two comfortable armchairs which were put to good use for watching an hour of TV!

We elected to eat in at night, and not being 'big eaters' chose a "Main Event" first course, plus pudding. The dining room staff were helpful and attentive.

We had fresh towels each day, and a delightful local lady attended to our room.

A few days prior to our arrival we had to alter our departure plans to accommodate the arrival of a new grandchild, which meant asking the hotel for an earlier breakfast so that we could get an early train to London. The hotel were very helpful. An order was put in the night before, for a cooked breakfast, and all went according to plan.

Parking was plentiful.

The rooms were warm and comfortable ( a bit too warm for a hardened person from the Southern Uplands of Scotland, but at least the windows opened and the radiators could be turned down. Better that way than finding a cold and unwelcoming hotel when the weather is cold, dreich and snowy !)

Room Tip: Room 11 at the top of the main staircase

Thank you for your complimentary review. Yes room 11 is a particular favourite of a number of our guests so I am pleased you liked it. I have passed your comments about the food onto the chef which was much appreciated. The delightful local lady is Marjorie who has worked at the hotel for years and is passionate about the standards she maintains in the rooms she services-but on her behalf thankyou for the lovely comment. Hope to be able to welcome you back to the Hillthwaite again in the future.

We stayed for one night in March. Whilst we had built up our expectations on the basis of reviews we felt that the overall package turned out to be disappointing.
The room allocated, although clean, was small and claustrophobic with an outlook set below the level of a car park. We kept out of it as much as possible.
We were reluctant to complain in view of the general atmosphere at reception and the brevity of our stay.
The evening meal was enjoyable and the breakfast very good.
Had we been booked for a further night however we would not have stayed. This at least was fortunate.
There are much better options available in the area and we would advise readers of the more outstanding TripAdvisor ratings to treat these perceptions with caution.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review, albeit not exactly of the nature we enjoy reading. However, I am sorry that you felt the room you were allocated was claustrophobic. The hotel has been so busy recently that most of our more spacious classic and superior rooms are getting booked up very early but the rate quoted for our basic ensuite rooms reflects the difference in size.loction and view. I am not quite sure how to interpret your comment about the 'atmosphere' at reception, presumably you mean because it was so busy with other guests coming and going. We pride ourselves in the warmth of our welcome and we always emphasise that we are ready to answer any guest worries or problem related to the hotel. I am pleased that you enjoyed the food and have passed your comments on to the Chef and his team. The Lake District has many great hotels however, they all have their own peculiarities and individualities and as I have said previously 'what suits one doesn't suit another,' I am surprised that you seem to feel that our positive reviews are in someway contrived and should be treated with caution, I can assure you that all our reviews are from genuine guests and we don't employ 'ghost' writers to post good reviews for us.

We set of to Hillthwaite House hotel in the most awful March weather, snow and strong winds but it was really worth braving the weather. We arrived early but we were welcomed and taken to a lovely warm lounge and given hot drinks, and that was the start of a fantastic weekend. Our room was wonderful so clean and comfortable, the food was some of the best we,ve ever tasted. Before dinner we had a lovely swim and sauna. The staff are so friendly and helpful. It was a wonderful experience and we,ll definitely be returning as soon as possible.

Room Tip: We can only say our room was the mid range price and it was fantastic.

Thanks for taking the time to write a review, sorry you had to brave the snow to get to us but I am so glad you felt we looked after you when you arrived. Although as you will have no doubt read from some other less complimentary reviewers our food doesn't everyone but thankfully it meets the expectations of the majority of your guests. Our kitchen team are passionate about the food they cook and try so hard to provide menus which are varied and interesting, positive feedback is so appreciated. As it was our Wedding Anniversary we wanted a well recommended hotel in the Laked District.
We thought, wrongly as it turned out Hillthwaite Hotel would be ideal.
We emailed long before we got there & on arrival mentioned to the receptionist who checked us in we are celebrating our wedding anniversary to which he said they take celebrations very seriously.
In our bedroom was a card wishing us a happy Wedding Anniversary so that is evedence that they had a least remembered, that is as far as it went.

Other niggles & annoyances.
Bedroom 242, or number 2 on door in the anex.
The bed was comfotable but for some reason we both faied to have a good night sleep.
If you wanted a bath which we prefer but the fixed liquid soap dispencer is screwed to the wall for a shower which is very inconvenient & cheap.
The water in the bath is just about hot enough difinatly could have been much hotter.
The central heating was difficult to reduce the heat or even more difficult to swich off so the heat was stifling.
As we were in the anex & talking to other guests we felt we were the poor relation.
In order to get to the anex you have to walk outside the main buiding in the cold & rain all be it under cover.
Restaurant. Table 28.
The 5 course meal sounds very nice & it is but the portions are very small, no potatoes & very few vegetables but what there is on the huge plate is good enough to take a picture of.
The food is well cooked just not enough of it.
Also at breakfast had to ask for a menu & borrow somebody's milk for my tea which was very weak.
We wanted to eat at 7pm on our Wedding Anniversary but were told the the earliest was 8pm but because of my disgust they found a table at 7.15pm.
As it turned out at 7.15pm there were 6 tables of 2 people & by 8pm there were about 15 tables of 2 people which still left two thirds of the restaurant compleatly empty, i think they were short staffed as the food took a long time to arrive.
There are many other niggles & annoyances but i think you get the jist.
Generally.
Some people liked it we thought we should have gone some other place & next year we will.
I feel you could do much better of the same money.
A BIG LET DOWN.
Also not suitable for disabled people

Room Tip: dont go in room 28

I was obviously very disappointed to read your review. I am sorry you felt we didnt come up to your expectations, especially regarding you wedding anniversary. When confirming a reservation we always mention that if the visit was to celebrate a special occasion that we can provide anything extra a guest requires e.g. champagne, chocolates, flowers etc. Nowadays so many of our guests are celebrating special occasions- sorry but it is impossible to provide these on a complimentary basis.

I can assure you that guests staying in the lodge are definitely not regarded as second class and receive just the same welcome and level of service as other guests staying in the main part of the hotel. Our reservation staff always explain the location of the annexe and the means of access to the main hotel building.

I am sorry you couldnt initially dine at the time you wanted, but for the benefit of all our guests and the quality of the food we serve, we have to limit the number of diners we can handle at any one time. On checking in we always try and encourage guests to book a table for dinner and we make every effort to accommodate their preferred dining time. We serve dinner between 7-9 p.m. but the vast majority of guests want to dine before 8.00 p.m. Logistically it is impossible for the style of food we serve to cater for 'a meal a minute.'

We try to provide food and service which is not stuffy or ostentatious and I have to say that for most of our guests it more than meets their expectations. I recognise that the Hillthwaite's relaxed and homely yet professional environment isnt to everyone's taste, but despite this we continue, in the words of the social media sites 'to win followers' and our occupancy levels, even in these difficult economic times, present a very healthy picture. From this I can only assume that your opinion of the Hillthwaite is not shared by 99% of our guests. However, we are only one of the many good hotels in the Lake District and I trust you will find one that is more compatible to your needs.
