We enjoyed another fantastic break at the Hillthwaite last week, this is the 4th time we've visited and will definitely go again. The staff are really welcoming and can't do enough for you. The 5 course dinner and breakfast are always lovely, there's a swimming pool and Bowness is only 15 minutes walk away, with Windermere 15 minutes the other way. We are able to take our dog,as they are allowed in your bedroom and in the conservatory, so we have our after dinner coffee in there.

Room Tip: There are advantages to most rooms. The rooms at the front on the first floor have lovely views of l...

We got a last minute booking having had an e.mail from them saying they had a deal on. On arrival everything looked fine BUT our room was not up to expectations. There was a damp patch on the ceiling in the bathroom, we had to move furniture to plug the kettle in & boil it on the floor or infront of the TV. We had to order our evening meal when we arrived in the afternoon & then when we went to the restaurant had to wait by the door to be seated (having been ignored by 4 members of staff who just walked passed us ) The meal on the web site was nothing like what was served. From start to finish it was a disappointment, small portions made to look even smaller by being served on vast plates which were cold as was the food. I think the chef needs to learn to walk before he can run (or it was his day off). When we checked out we were just presented with the bill, not asked if we had enjoyed our stay, was everything ok, nothing. I even had to ask for the bill as the receptionist just stood there looking at me, she did'nt even ask how she could help. WE WILL NOT BE GOING BACK

We try our best to get things right, and as the majority of our reviews show, we do generally manage to do so. However, this reviewer has identified some areas that clearly are in need of attention and I am glad they have taken the trouble to point them out. I am sorry that we have not been as attentive as we should have been, and that the room and our food left something to be desired on this occasion. I am also sorry that they will not return, but understand their reasons for doing so.

Having been to Hillthwaite a few times before with my wife and my family, I was thinking of trying somewhere different (we were planning on walking Ulldale). However, following a call, we got a good rate for one night dinner, bed and breakfast. We arrived mid afternoon and the hotel was fairly full, but we were dealt with promptly and professionally. We even received a voucher for a free glass of mulled wine. There seems to be significant investment being put into the hotel, as our room had been recently refurbished and was very clean. Further work was being done on another room, but this did not cause any disruption to the guests. The pool was nice and warm and the sauna was very relaxing (although the steam room was not on at the time, they will turn it on if requested to). Although they were unable to serve dinner before 7pm (one of our number wanted to watch the football!!), they do offer the walk in menu earlier if required. The dinner itself was very tasty and although there is not an enormous amount on the plate, its certainly plenty when you're having 5 courses. I am a good eater and I left feeling nice and full. The service was excellent and the staff were very helpful. Breakfast was plentiful the next morning, and we were well set up for the next day. The only small gripe I would have was that when we got up just before 8am, the newspaper had not been delivered, which is surprising, as Lakeland walkers are notoriously early birds. However, overall I was particularly pleased with my stay and I'll certainly be returning again in the future.

Room Tip: There is a very significant price difference in the rooms depending on size and location in the hote...

We returned to this lovely traditional hotel, well-placed overlooking Lake Widermere and surrounding fells. We stayed in a superioir room, which lived up to its name with a luxurious bathroom, comfortable 4 poster and plenty of lighting options, facilties and great views. This is a quet hotel, with excellent breakfasts and dinners. There are various areas to relax, with open fires, a small pool, sauna and steam room. The staff are friendly, helpful and charming. Excellent value for money- but as a returning guest we did benefit from a small discount which made it difficult to refuse. We will return. There is some refurbishment currently, but we were not disturbed or inconvenienced by it. There's plenty of parking on-site, and if you're planning a quiet trip to the Lakes for walking or other leisure, this is a very nice place to base your stay in.

Had a lovely stay at this hotel, from the moment we arrived till the time we left we were given and had first class food and service. all staff and guests were very friendly the 5 course meal was first class and bottle of wine was very reasonably priced.
Will be staying again thats for sure, the hotel is nicely place for a walk to the lakes or to the shops. my only moan and its only a little one the bed was a bit on the small side.
Will visit with the children next time excellent value!!!!

Just back from short break -had a great time. Room was traditionally furnished but spacious clean and comfortable nice touches with quality toiletries and bottled water in fridge. Food was terrific the starter on our first night was a show stopper- pigeon breast served with a barley risotto absolutely fabulous. Venison and guinea fowl for mains also delicious. Second evening featured fillet steak cooked perfectly and cod fillet with a cream and mussel sauce both terrific. Philip the head chef deserves a huge pat on the back for running such a great kitchen. Breakfast was also good with quality produce only small quibble about the black pudding a bit dry for our taste the sausages were amazing though. Staff were friendly and very helpful. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend for a good value relaxing break.
