We have stayed at the Hillthwaite almost every year for the last 10 years, at all times of the year. This summer we treated ourselves to a 5 night stay. We have never been disappointed. The service is always friendly and efficient.
We have found that it is really worth spending a little extra to get a room with lake view and 4 poster bed...the executive rooms in particular are fantastic - room 16 in particular. The standards of the beds and bedding and cleanliness are always extremely high. The food is remarkable - a 5 course menu that changes completely every night and makes use of locally sourced produce and regional specialities. The dining room is a really pleasant place to be with fabulous views and attentive but not intrusive service. The breakfast menu offers more quality and choice than any other hotel (including some with 4 or 5 stars) that we have stayed in....the welsh rarebit is a must!
We've yet to find a hotel anywhere else that matches up to the value of the Hillthwaite - we can't help but compare everywhere else to its very high standards!

My husband and I recently stayed at Hillthwaite House Hotel for our Wedding Anniversary . We stayed for two fabulous nights, from the moment we checked in at the reception we were made to feel very welcome. We stayed in a standard room which was an exceptionally high standard, beautifully decorated it was nice to see everything matched. The food was of a very high standard a 5 course dinner in the evening and a very good hearty breakfast, they certainly have an excellent chef. We are at a loss to understand why this Hotel is not 5 star. The staff were all very pleasant and went out of their way to make sure everything was ok, each one had a smile on their face. We were so impressed we have booked to stay on there New Year package. I am sure this will go down as our favourate place to stay in the future.Maybe we will try one of their Superior rooms with a view of the lake at some time in the future.

Family run house, which is deceivingly large. went away for 2 nights fri/say with my husband for his 30th birthday surprise. should have seen his face when we walked into the room and he saw theview his mouth was hanging very low... we paid £420 which inc breakfast and eveningmeal, which was 5 courses.

I spent about 3 full days searching the web for the perfect pad, & came across this as it was a little bit more pricey but included evening meals and breakfast, and liked the look of the room

I went for room 16, which is the only room upstaairs with a massive bay window, with floor to ceiling glass which offered views to side also. you could see lake windermere, and the boats on it, the mountains in the distance, all the greeary inbetween, it was lovely. very quite room, and being on the end only had one room next to you, no noise from raffic or anything. got our linen changed and roomcleaned every day we were there.
Flat screen tv, tea coffee making facilities, dvd player, cd player, frige, phone etc. phone only 17p per unit, on leaving our bill was a mere £1.22, which is really good, expecting £10+!!

free bottles of red, white wine, sparking and still water in room - very lovely which we never expected at all.

number 16 can be viewed on the website, it is the executive suite/room with 4 poster bed, and blue and white patterned wallpaper, also had a spa bath, which we never used.

The evening meal is out of this world. We noramlly pay about £30 each for a 2/3 course meal when we go out, and after this meal we would have paid£40+ each, so definetely worth the package deal we got. The breakfast was good too, although no baked beans!! Plenty of staff all clean & professional. Didn't mither you but made sure you were okay etc. We were absoloutely bloated after we ate everything they gave us, homemade chunky bread oh! Its just lush food. There are 3 bay windows in restaurant which we asked to sit at one night & was told we were to sit there anyway, there was candles/flowers etc at table. Nice would def reccommend. Pleanty of choice, different menu everyday - they asked us to pick before 7pm, to they could not keep you waiting, which is fine!!

There were well behaved dogs staying at the hotel, i think they have set rooms for these people with dogs. There was family aswell which i was suprised, but they have a sitting room, with loads of sofas in again with a window view, where there is chess, monopoly etc. We just sat and played chess alot. Bar is well stocked & you get a complimentary glass of bubbly when you stop - which was plesent. Olives/nibbles on all tables in the bar, which was cool...

Swimming pool, sauna and steam room was ok, pool a little cool but refreshing. Think it needs a bit of modernising/decoration, definetely hasn't been done for a few years. Free towels from reception

Late key can be given but we found no need as there was always someone on reception

The hotel is located between windermere & bowness, so good walking distance to both about 10 mins one way & 20 mins the other. There are also taxis you can book but we never bothered as weather was warm & fine.

Can keep on writing forever, but go definetely, and if you can stretch go for room 16. We also got a voucher on departure saying we had 30% off if we went again before xmas this year, which is good, and will definetely go again!!

I’ve booked this hotel for a romantic weekend with my boyfriend, based on the previous reviews.
We have had a double room with lake view & Jacuzzi at a cost of £155 PER PERSON for 2 nights B&B.

The problems already started at the booking, as their email-server was done, so I’ve needed to call them up. The gentleman on the phone was neither nice nor really happy that I want to book, I felt somehow he is in rush and I disturb him with my booking… Never mind, I thought, we give them a chance.

Based on the room-description, I thought it will be a nice treat: double room, lake view, and Jacuzzi!
We have had room 27.
The room is very small, literally there is only a small gap between the end of the bed and the table in the front of it.
The bathroom is also small, very plain, basic, and the Jacuzzi is simply a bathtube, and of course not big enough for two people.
Lake view: is more a parking-place-view. It’s a joke that they call it lake-view room.
Check out the pictures!

We have had breakfast on both mornings, the service was absolutely chaotic, the waiters do not seem to be able to handle the breakfast-period.

We did not have dinner, so I can not comment on that.

The room has no minibar, the tap-water is not really pleasant to drink, so you need to pre-organize something if you want some refreshment for the night.

We did not have the time to check out the swimming-pool, so I can not comment.

Positive sides: the bed is very comfy, the bedding is good quality, the room and the bathroom are very clean, the cleaners really do a great job!

Negative sides: the room is very small, the Jacuzzi is a gimmick, the lake-view is a joke, and the service is chaotic.

We could see, that they have nice bigger rooms (suites?), but I am sure for that money you can find something much nicer in the area.

Very attractive hotel in an excellent location, close to Bowness & Windermere centres. High on a hill with stunning views all round.
We stayed for one night to celebrate an anniversary and we received an exceptionally warm welcome. We had paid for an Executive room and were given one of the very best in the hotel.
As others have said, the little touches such as the free welcome drink at the bar and the complimentary wine in the Executive rooms all add to the quality of the place.

We were lucky with the weather and it was a pleasure to be able to sit sunbathing on the gorgeous terrace for a few hours with our champagne.

The dining room is pleasant and the food is good, although the supplements for fillet steak and dover sole were quite steep at about £9 per head.

All in all, a very well run hotel, comfortable and homely. Arguably a little pricey but, in our experience, worth the money.
