“Long weekend away in the Lakes”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 18, 2014

Applegarth Villa is a delightful Hotel situated in just the right location for visiting the many beautiful sites in the area. We stayed for 3 nights including delicious breakfast and dinner. The room was lovely with some well thought out features, the bed, so spacious, nice sheets and towels, the bathroom very attractive and the patio doors leading to our own terrace - would have been ideal if the weather had been a touch warmer.
The proprietors, family and staff were all very warm, friendly and helpful throughout our stay. When we have some more time we would love to go back. Loved the decor, taps and light fittings

Room Tip: All individual to suit pocket and taste

Having stayed at the Applegarth Hotel about 15 years ago (pre-"Guest Accommodation" status), my wife and I visited again one night recently.
First of all I should try to explain the difference between the AA ratings - 5 Star Hotel & 5 Star Guest Accommodation. - (Taken Direct from the AA Website).
5 Star Hotel - Luxurious accommodation and public areas, with a range of extra facilities and a multilingual service available. Guests are greeted at the hotel entrance. High quality menu and wine list.
5 Star Guest Accommodation - Awareness of each guest's needs with nothing being too much trouble. All bedrooms are en suite or have a private bathroom. Excellent quality beds and furnishings. Breakfast includes specials/home-made items, high quality ingredients, and fresh local produce.
The secret for all "Trippers" is to recognise that the difference between the two is far reaching so best not to rely just on the number of stars visible.
So the now named "Applegarth Villa & Restaurant" is AA rated 5 Star Guest Accommodation.
Don't go to this place if you are expecting 5 star treatment as per hotels - you won't get it. In essence that's not what they are about. What they are about is providing very good quality rooms and facilities and in my experience a very excellent restaurant with a high level of quality of table service to boot.
We stayed in Luxury Room 17 which was very nice. Comfy large bed, Freeview TV (so not many channels), Bog standard Tea/Coffee making facilities could be much improved and there is no view from the window due to the room being half below ground level so you are looking up from the window into the picnic area outside. The room was Very Well furnished throughout with the advantage of having a very large Spa Bath and drench shower over the top. It was great - would have been even better if there had been any instructions as to how the thing actually worked in fact when we tried it the whole place (including the two of us) where totally drenched. It reminded me of a royal parade up the Thames with water cannon aiming in all directions. Then we realised how it worked.
Just one niggle here - There was a build up of bacteria in small areas of the cream grout between the tiling on either side of the bath. My wife spotted it and I was quite surprised seeing it's easy to clean off and prevent.
We had booked a table in the restaurant for 8pm and spent a short while in the bar lounge whilst our table was prepared (Peroni on draught). There is a £25 pp charge for 3 courses of the standard menu (excludes the steak I think which incurs a small surcharge). Our starters were very good and for our mains we both chose the Rustic Cumbrian Lamb and what a good choice. It was without doubt the best Lamb I have ever tasted! A succulent sort of fillet of meat perfectly cooked with a very good Madeira & red currant reduction. This was on the menu for £18.95 so really good value. It was so good I was sad when I had put the last small piece in my mouth.
We had chosen a bottle of Rioja at £15 which was very good both in taste and value for money.
Sweets were very nice and well presented
We both slept very well and emerged refreshed at the breakfast table in the morning.
Unfortunately breakfast was a different matter. Orange juice from concentrate, tinned Mushrooms (don't you just hate tinned mushrooms) with my Full English and American Pancakes (Wife's choice) which tasted like semi-soggy Cardboard. Those were the bad bits - The sausage, bacon etc were well cooked and tasty.
So all in all for the £218 we paid for the night's stay + around £90 for food and drinks we were more than happy. Would we go back - Most Probably.

Room Tip: The more you pay the better the room.

Thank you so much for your positive feedback. Just one thing that Head Chef has asked me to take issue with ! Never ever has Chef used tinned mushrooms. This is a Chef that is so neurotic about the freshness and quality of his food that he only has one small freezer, and that is for his icecreams!. With a forty seater restaurant and fifteen 5* bedrooms it would be neither practical or make economic sense to use anything but fresh. It is a shame you did not raise these points during your visit as Chef would have been delighted to invite you into his kitchen and show you exactly how breakfast is prepared from freshly delivered produce. Maybe next time!

We stayed at the Applegarth Villa for 4 nights with an evening meal included in the price in January It is the first time we have stayed at this hotel. We had a warm welcome, room was very comfortable. We had no guide to television programmes on TV there was a problem with this at the time but when we returned our first evening a TV guide was in our room, a very thoughtful gesture. All our meals were fantastic especially the evening meals. In was nice to have a bar in the hotel as some days we returned and the weather not always brilliant so able to have a drink in bar. I would definitely return and before we left we requested to have a look at there refurbished larger room, fantastic.

Room Tip: If you can go for the larger rooms especially the ones with jacuzzi baths

Thank you for your kind review. Like yourself, many Guests enjoy having the bar and restaurant onsite. Its a great asset on a cold Lakeland evening when you don't feel like venturing out and in summer the terrace is probably the best place in Windermere to enjoy watching the sun set over the Lakeland fells. We look forward to your return visit

We stayed for two nights on a dinner, bed & breakfast basis for my recent birthday and so were looking for a bit of luxury. Well, we weren't disappointed!!! I love my food and the food at the Villa is very, very, yummy. The decor is gorgeous. We stayed in room 17-bath for two and a in-bath tv which I absolutely loved. The owners & staff were great. On the second morning my husband was indisposed and couldn't make breakfast so a breakfast tray was immediately suggested and made up for him.We will be back!

Once again, we have enjoyed another three night stay at the Applegarth Villa, relaxing in serene luxurious surroundings. Alan, Suzanne and the team are so friendly and helpful - nothing is too much trouble for them. The food is of a very high standard, always a brilliant menu and the breakfasts are to die for. It is especially good for those who have to follow a coeliac diet. Applegarth Villa is luxury at its best and definitely worth a visit. Claire and Steve from East Yorkshire.
