“Beautiful room and views- a great stay!”
Reviewed September 13, 2011

The room

I have never felt inclined to write a review on here before but we have just got back from staying in room 8 in the Applegarth and have to say it was one of the most stylish, clean and comfortable rooms I have ever stayed in. We originally booked a deluxe room with a double bed but when we entered the room realised we must have been upgraded as we had a massive 7 foot bed. There was also a chaise lounge, table and two chairs, a dressing table and enough room to do a cartwheel (which may have been attempted!)

The hotel is really beautiful as it has lots of art deco touches such as stained glass windows but is also very modern with amenities such as an ipod dock, TV and radio. It has been decorated to a very high standard but in keeping with the building and has a lovely relaxed, welcoming feel. We had a really lovely view looking out to mountains which we could admire from the huge bed. We had a 2 brilliant nights sleep thanks to the blinds and thick curtains which kept out the light and the massive comfy bed. All the entertainment we needed with the ipod dock, radio and TV and the chaise lounge to sit on to admire the views. Oh and the bathroom was lovely and clean and the shower was amazing! And as a girl the powerful hairdryer was much appreciated!

Restaurant/ Night life

We did not actually eat in the restaurant apart from for breakfast which was OK/good but not brilliant but the waitress was really lovely and although it was past finishing time for breakfast she asked if we would like anything else so we did not feel rushed. Although we did not eat in the restaurant, we had a drink in the bar and as a young couple (under 30) I can understand what people say about the quietness and lack of atmosphere of the bar and restaurant. However there is music and I would say in general as a hotel restaurant and bar the atmosphere seems as good as any.

We do not tend to stay to eat in hotel restaurants as we like to explore the area and see what the night life is like. We were able to take a taxi for about £4 into Bowness (2 mins in tax, 15 mins walking) where there are lots of restaurants, bars and a couple of clubs, nothing spectacular but good fun. We were then able to let ourselves into the hotel as a front door key is provided. There are also a couple of bars and restaurants in Windermere itself. So I think the hotel provides for all ages as an older couple would probably enjoy the relaxed and quiet atmosphere of the hotel bar/restaurant and if not it is literally a 2 minutes stroll to lively bars in Windermere.

Location/ Day activities

As mentioned the location was great, the hotel is a few seconds walk from the shops, restaurants and bars of Windermere and there is a very handy CO-OP and late night garage. Or you can walk for 15 mins down the road to Bowness where there are more shops and restaurants and the lake where we hired a boat. The Spa is also in Bowness which we visited as part of the hotel and had a great time there in the sauna and steam rooms! The hotel is also in a great location to take walks from and we did a 2 1/2 mile walk (there are much longer ones but we were feeling a bit fragile from the night before!) which we got from tourist information which again is a few seconds away.

The service

Looking at the reviews before we went a lot of people mentioned the owners and staff weren't very friendly. As we didn't use the restaurant for dinner we can't comment on that but as mentioned the waitress at breakfast was lovely and I bumped into the cleaner one morning and she was very friendly too. We didn't have any complaints or requests or questions as we like to explore the area ourselves so we didn't have much interaction with the owner. However on arrival he was extremely friendly and asked appropriate questions without being over the top. And he was very friendly apparently on check out too (I was still packing!). I do think that check out could be a bit later maybe just 11 instead of half 10 would be good. Overall I'd say the service was very friendly and polite and you didn't feel like the staff and owners were overbearing or wanted to be your friend which is maybe what some people want?

Also the fact that the staff weren't always around at reception and you had your own front door key meant you had a lot of freedom without feeling like you were being watched which you can sometimes feel in small hotels. But you could ring the bell for assistance and staff were there instantly.

Overall

An absolutely lovely hotel from the outside and inside with a beautiful, clean, spacious modern room. The freedom to do what you want but staff there when you required them. Friendly staff and great location. An awesome stay!

Room Tip: We had room 8 which looked over to the mountains so I'd say any on that side, high up would be b...

My fiancé bought me here as part of a surprise proposal. After an amazing walk to orrest head we were welcomed to the hotel in room 7- absolutely gorgeous with a jacuzzi bath big enough for 4! The room was modern decor, very comfortable bed and even a chaise longue. We also had our engagement meal in the hotel- we came down to the lounge to be seated and to order drinks and our meals- then taken to the dining room once our food was ready which was amazing. Our table was also decorated in engagement confetti which made it extra special! The food was delicious as was breakfast the next day with a great selection available on the menu.

Thank you again applegarth villas- you made our special occasion even better!

Stayed in the Deluxe Room 5 for two nights and was very impressed. The room was very spacious and modern with some special touches. Ate in the hotel resturant both nights - delicious! If your looking for a top weekend break in the Lakes, this is the place to go.

This is our second visit to this fantastic hotel. We stayed here December 08 and thought there could be no way it could improve but the hard work that has gone in to making the rooms look even more fabulous and some alterations in other areas has done nothing but enhance what was already a fabulous hotel. Food is outstanding and you are not hurried off your table or pressured to vacate the resteraunt. From the moment you arrive you are made to feel very welcome and the atmosphere is warm and friendly. Kevin was great throughout and nothing was a problem. Our room was sumptious with a luxury spa bath which was superb after a long days walking. We will definately back and most certainly will not be leaving it 2 years till our next visit. Thanks for a superb stay.

Room Tip: If you want to spoil yourself room 17 is one of the best!!

My husband and I stayed at The Applegarth for 2 nights as a birthday treat. We had read previous reviews and felt that some might be a little unfair, after all, the website made it look fabulous! So we visited with open minds and really hoped we'd come away giving it 5 stars.
To set the scene, we own and run our own pub and restaurant so feel we can provide a balanced opinion, knowing what it takes behind the scenes to create a place for people to enjoy themselves.
On arrival the initial impressions were that it was smart and modern and we were looking forward to getting inside.
We were greeted by the owner who checked us in very quickly, gave us a map and showed us where the spa was, then he directed us to our room. We did not get shown up or any offer of assistance with luggage but this was not a problem to us.
We stayed in room 7 on the first floor. The bathroom was fantastic with a huge jacuzzi bath. We were unsure how to work this at first but found a switch in the bedroom, no details were provided in the welcome brochure though.
The bedroom itself was OK, not as large as it appeared on the website and the bed was only a double and not very luxurious, in fact, my husband found it very uncomfortable and did not sleep well either night.
The restaurant is small and intimate but oh so quiet, there is some background music but at such a low volume you could've heard a pin drop and therefore the room lacked atmosphere. The food was of a reasonable standard, nothing outstanding in our opinion but enjoyable all the same. The first night the meal was quite rushed and we would have preferred to take our time and enjoy our wine etc.
We had a couple of drinks in the bar afterwards but it was very quiet and by 10pm we were the only ones left and the owner started turning the lights off so I guess it was bedtime!
Breakfast was alright, table service so you had to ask for everything. They forgot juice so had to be reminded, the poached eggs were overcooked but the full English was acceptable and more toast was brought without any problem.
On our second evening it was the son in law Kevin who was working. He was noticeably absent from the bar for long periods, even though it was busier. We sat with empty glasses for a while waiting for him to return.
Overall we feel this place has so much potential, its got so many positives and with just a bit of tweaking, could be excellent.
Service leaves a lot to be desired, the owners do not seem bothered and do not seem to appreciate their guests. The general feeling is underwhelming.
The decor in the main is very nice, although confused in parts with the odd tacky faux floral arrangement that looks totally out of place!
Location was good, in Windermere close to shops and only 15 mins walk to the lake and Bowness.
Would we return? Probably not. We enjoyed our stay but felt it hugely overpriced for what we got, even at the Lakes premium prices.
A shame as the website gave us such high hopes for a luxury break.
We just hope they realise what they have and brush up on these weaknesses as it could be magnificent.

Room Tip: See the website for photos as all rooms are different, room 7 has a fantastic bathroom.

I have stayed at this hotel 4 times now and can not fault the rooms, the food and the more than friendly accomodating service. Anyone who feels otherwise is lacking in the ability to politely ask for ANYTHING they need or the intelligence to appreciate the hard working honest, self employed amongst us. Those of us who often travel alone on business will totally appreciate how warm and welcoming this place is - if you're on a holiday and out for a relaxing break.......enjoy! The lamb is superb and my steak was oresome.....I'll be back x

Room Tip: I have stayed in 3 different rooms all were new, clean, modern and comfortable

My husband arranged a two night stay for our 1st wedding anniversary and although the hotel itself is beautiful (our room was lovely) Applegarth does lack the small touches that you would expect from a 5* hotel. Mainly around the standard of the breakfast and the attention to detail with service and housekeeping.

I don't feel that our expectations were too high at all but we were left feeling that overall it was GOOD but not great. I also gave my feedback direct to the hotel but was almost made to feel like things were my fault and the response was quite tepid.

Overall OK.
