“Wet but wonderful!!”
Reviewed May 17, 2013

We only had time for a one night stay at The Samling and it was our first visit. The experience was fantastic and it will we hope be the first of many visits. All the rooms are beautiful providing every thing you need with lots of luxuries as well. The setting is amazing with stunning views of the lake and surrounding countryside. The staff are wonderful, friendly, helpful and extremely efficient and the food! It was some of the best we've ever had. We had the tasting menu with wine matching, something we've done before in some of the top hotels in the world and The Samling did not disappoint. The chef is very talented, the menu was inventive, there was a bit of theatre and the food tasted fabulous. If you can't manage a stay we would certainly recommend trying to have a meal there, they do lunch, dinner and afternoon tea.
We got drenched on our walk, but the countryside is so beautiful and knowing we could look forward to a hot soak in our beautiful bathroom followed by pre-dinner drinks our spirits never flagged. After only one night we returned home more rested and relaxed than we have from some much longer breaks. The Samling is a place we certainly recommend.

Room Tip: All the rooms are lovely, the ones at the front have the best views but the less expensive ones stil...

This was our first visit and will certainly not be our last. The complete weekend was wonderful, our suite (Lethera) was beautiful, spread over 3 floor levels with the most amazing view of Lake Windermere. We had the tasting menu included in our booking which was delicious and an unusual and complete dining experience. The waiting staff were extremely knowledgable and informative about all the courses, wines and cheeses without being overbearing or stuffy. A real delight.
We also had breakfast delivered to our room in order to make the most of it and enjoyed eating it at the table by the window looking over the lake. This was ordered the evening before and delivered exactly on time, again by friendly and helpful staff. All in all a really lovely place.

The last time I wrote a review for the Samling I really wanted to give it 'excellent' status but thought I couldn't as I had a couple of minor quibbles. I am happy to say that, after a return visit, it rightly deserves to be rated as 'excellent' - as it truly is a wonderful experience to go there and it thoroughly deserves the highest recommendation.

As I said what can you say about the Samling Hotel other than a fantastic experience ...great "shabby chic" hotel, great location, great food & great service!

We stayed in the Pym suite in the loft of main house. It comprised a sitting area with tea & coffee making facilities and overlooked the lake, which ran through the bedroom and bathroom with large walking shower, deep batch and good toiletries!

We went for the tasting menu, good value and an option to try some wonderful experimental food. The fish course and pre-desert adding a touch of wow!

The staff, who were all quite young, were well-trained and couldn't do enough to ensure that you had an exceptional stay.

Only down side would be that with our suite being in the loft it was quite warm even with the windows open. So if you prefer a cooler room ask for another option.

Room Tip: Suite in the loft has great views but can be hot.

On arrival at the samling we were greeted by very welcoming staff and our room was very comfortable with the most amazing
views over to the lake .
We had booked the 7 course dinner and although we are both 'foodies' I don't eat fish and my husband dislikes cheese !
The chef was very accommodating and we had a meal of the finest standard which delivered wonderful fresh tastes with a couple of theatrical moments - the pre desert and the fish dish to name a couple
The second night I was going to try the vegetarian option and my husband was going to try the a la carte but the chef cooked us a different 7 course extravaganza and I still managed to try some of the cheese from the extensive cheese board
We are lucky enough to have eaten in some great restaurants around the world - to date the Quay in Sydney and rusten vrede in s Africa were our favourites but the two meals at the samling have to rival these

Throughout out our stay the ( very young) staff were knowledgeable and friendly whether discussing food wine cheese or the local area
Any one passing through the area would miss the Samling completely but we will return !
