This is not an unbiased review as my wife and I are two of the volunteer members of the Lakeland Horticultural Society who do all the work in the gardens. It is a lovely place to work in as well as visit.

I can confirm that tea and coffee are now available, but not a full blown cafe. My recommendation is to bring a picnic and eat it while enjoying the view from one of the many benches in the gardens. The one at the top of the woodland walk with a view over Windermere to the Langdales is particularly recommended.

Visit on a Wednesday morning If you particularly want to meet and chat with gardeners. There is a free guided walk round the garden at 11am. If you prefer a quieter time the garden is open from dawn till dusk every day of the year. Come on a summer evening and you may have the whole place to yourself.

There is a free car park (with overflow at busy times), easy wheelchair access to the walled garden and surrounding areas, but paths in other areas can be steep and rather rough.

If you haven't visited for a few years you will find that the LHS has now taken over responsibility for the tarn at the bottom of the gardens, which has a lovely informal path around it and the opportunity to see the family of swans developing.

The astilbes will be at their spectacular best in the next week or two, worth a visit on their own. Do come.

What a beautiful place for a garden, and what a garden it is! I visit lots of gardens and this has to be a new favourite. There is so much to see. We went in July and I would love to view it in all the seasons. We spent a happy afternoon strolling in the sunshine. The plants are labeled which is so helpful. They have the national collections for ferns and astilbes. I bought "Washington" so hope it likes my garden!
Go if you can - you won't regret it.

This is a calm oasis, just a few minutes off the busy A591. The gardens are run and maintained by the Lakeland Horticultural Society. They are at the top of a hill, on the road from Windermere over Kirkstone Pass to Ullswater. Plenty of parking, a walked garden as well as a more open hillside rockery with some interesting and unusual plants and trees. The views over Windermere and across to the Langdales are spectacular.
