“Perfect Honeymoon!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 14, 2010

We went to Gilpin on our honeymoon and found it to be the perfect hotel! We stayed in a garden suite and whilst they are pricey we didn't begrudge the cost one bit. The room was stunning, a hot tub and the biggest, softest bed ever made it even better. The housekeeping service was fabulous, everytime we went back to our room it was spotless and tidy.

The real star of the show though was the staff in the hotel and the food. From the minute we arrived everyone knew our names and addressed us as Mr. and Mrs. (which my new wife loved!) and knew we were honeymooning - we were made to feel very special and valued. The food was incredible, 5 courses inclusive inthe price meant we just ate and ate all night, dinner every night was an event!

We will certainly go back - we have stayed in some big 5 star hotels and this was the best we have been to!

Lovely hotel with excellent food, we had quail and venison which was perfect and not too fussy. Troutbeck suite was spacious and has great views. Not cheap but nice for a treat. Jess was very helpful and friendly and recommended The Queens Head in Troutbeck for Sunday Lunch and it was excellent.

I didn't stay at the hotel but travelled from Southport in Merseyside for the experience of dining at Gilpin Lodge.
I must say I wasn't at all disappointed. The service was absolutely amazing. The staff were so attentive and yet so sensitive to the needs of their diners AND they were so knowledgeable about the food and the range of wines that they had on offer.
The food was a pleasurable experience with probably the best blend of flavours in ALL of the dishes that I have tasted for a long time. My absolute compliments to the chef.
The atmosphere was so relaxing. The wine list was very comprehensive and very reasonably priced.

We stayed at the hotel in November during a week of torrential rainfall. Gilpin Lodge was a cosy and elegant refuge during the downpours. The lounge and dining areas were beautifully furnished and the bedrooms were large and very comfortable.

The food was amazing, definitely deserving of a Michelin star (it was comparable if not better than Holbeck Ghyll just down the road). The only negative factor was that the sommelier was a bit tardy serving matching wines for the taster menu.

We visited here in May 2007 before the arrival of our first child, we stayed for two nights and really enjoyed it. We found the general atmosphere cosy but the restaurant area was rather quiet and made you feel a litte uncomfortable at first. A couple of drinks and all was fine....
The food was lovely but the portions rather small especially for my husbands hearty appetite. I know that a la carte portions are smaller but we are used to visiting my brothers restaurant in London where you can order many portions, in tapas style to michelin star standard.
The breakfasts were lovely here and there was lots of choice, we also enjoyed the afternoon tea and the relaxation area where you could enjoy light bites and drinks. ( I believe the layout is different now though)
The room was fine, clean and comfortable. I would liked to have stayed in a suite or garden suite but I felt them overpriced for the length of stay and standard of hotel.
I would like to go back again though and may do so in 2011 if we can get a good deal....

Not cheap but yet Gilpin offers excellent value for money. Twenty bedrooms offering different acommodation types all of which are tastefully decorated, warm, above all clean. The hotel is not the usual BB&EM but rather EM+BB. The dining is high end but not at all pretentious and the wine cellar is very comprehensive providing some of the finest wines from all around the world. Excellent service coupled with a relaxed ambience makes for a pleasant peaceful experience - a great place to chill out.. Conveniently located a short drive from Windermere, it is most certainly a consideration for that very special occassion.

Which is what we told the owners when we departed. The reviewer who called it pretentious clearly would not know quality if he or she tripped over it. We spent two nights in the Sergeant Man which is very privately located and very well laid out. We wanted a room that we could "live in" while we were there and it met all those expectations. Sitting in the hot tub as the sun dipped on a cold evening was a new and invigorating experience, enhanced remarkably by the attention of a llama not ten yards away!

The food actually was the stay's trump card. It was all of the highest quality. My wife does not eat meat and we have lost count of the number of poor fish meals she has had, but the brill was superb. Providing and cooking fish well is a real test of a restaurant which they passed with flying colours on both evenings. Breakfast, was very good with a good choice of dishes. Again my eggs benedict was perfectly cooked.

Here's the bottom line. Yes it is an expensive hotel but if the quality is provided then the value is there. We have stayed in similarly priced hotels, mainly in cities, all over the world and maintain that in terms of quality of accommodation and service and especially food this is one of the best we have experienced. And we are not easy to please!
