Fantastic staff - very genuine and warm, all from different places and all with their own charm, not forced to conform to a 'hotel norm'.
Lovely food in both restaurants.
We stayed in the first floor suites of the main building and they are in need of renovation - majorly creaking floorboards in the corridor outside our room woke us early and kept us awake at night, bathrooms were outdated - mirrored shower doors, gold-plated taps, .., but overall a lovely hotel in a stunning location

I visited hear with my girlfriend midweek in October for a surprise overnight stay. We stayed in the Harriet room in the lake house. The room was beautiful and the rest of the lake house was flawless. We both had treatments upon arrival, followed by drinks in the hot tub with stunning views. The hotel staff were all fantastic and went above and beyond to make our stay perfect. I proposed on the evening in the boat house and the staff kindly decorated the area and placed a bottle of champagne on the table. We were then picked up from the lake house and taken to the restaurant for our evening meal. Once again the food was fantastic and all the staff were so friendly and helpful. I must give a special mention to Tom one of the members of staff in the lake house who helped make sure my proposal went exactly as planned on the day. We will definitely go back here again in the future!
Thanks again Gilpin lake house for an incredible stay.

It is incredible how the Gilpin was able to provide a luxurious upscale experience without the stuffiness of a high-end establishment. Our experience was perfect, beyond our expectations. From the moment we checked in, we were treated with amazing warmth and care. The personal touches doted on us made us feel special and spoiled. Sarah, Cameron, Helen, Dereck, Michael, Solvu, and Mintu were some of the staff members who made our stay memorable. The food was AMAZING!! We had dinners at the Spice and Hrishi. Each had its own style, but both were incredible. We also LOVED our afternoon Tea. Our room, the Cleabarrow, was beautiful and extremely comfortable. It was also huge! We hope to be able to come back soon.

To be fair, we haven’t eaten here but our experience might just tell you something about this establishment and let you draw your own conclusions. We visited at 2pm on a Sunday afternoon and the staff kindly allowed us to be seated in the lovely sitting room to have tea with friends who had travelled some distance to see us. We also wanted to have a look at the hotel with a view to eating here during the week. We ordered tea and I said I’d love some cake. I was told that nothing more than biscuits was available until 4pm when afternoon tea is served. So rules are rules. Rather than post my complaint on this site first I decided to email the hotel. This was their response:

“I am the manager of the Gilpin Hotel and wanted to email you to apologise about your visit last week, We as a hotel thrive on our guest care and unfortunately we failed this time, I can only apologise and sorry about the disappointment “

So, they’re sorry I was disappointed. But no addressing of this as being petty ruling or whether they’d made a mistake. Nothing to address the actual complaint. Ah well.

Given that lunch was being served, afternoon tea would later be served and that the kitchen is award winning, I will leave you to decide for yourself whether we could have been served something rather than nicer with our tea than biscuits and whether the rule was a little rigid. Suffice to say our house party who arrived later that week were not taken there for dinner.

We arrived on a Sunday afternoon for a nights stay in one of the garden suites. We felt looked after from the moment we arrived. Check in was very smooth and we swiftly got escorted to the room. The room was lovely with a hot tub on the decking with a beautiful view of the alpacas.
We had some lunch and drinks in the bar for lunch and the service was excellent yet very simple and made you feel at home instantly.
Our dinner was in the Hirishi Restaurant which didn't disappoint, the waiters had excellent knowledge of the wines and again made the experience very relaxing.
Would absolutely return and would recommend to anyone!

Room tip: Hot Tub is a must!
