We had hoped to go abroad to get some sun but circumstance meant we couldn't. This was an excellent substitute even in the rain and wind with a broken ferry and closed Beatrix Potter house!
We stayed in Buttermere suite which has direct access to the garden. I didn't see the other rooms other than on the website, but this was worth the extra. It had a huge comfy bed, with a jaccuzi and great shower, fluffy towels and robes and best of all, really good service.
All the staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. They booked us golf, advised us on walks, and had an excellent knowlesge of the extensive wine list.
Dinner starts off with drinks and canapes and the menu to peruse. Not sure how many wines they had but hundreds at a guess. Large selection of French and South Africa all reasoably priced. Food was seriously good and not enormous portions - which was great as we were staying for more than one night.
Menu changed every night and was local in flavour, There was a separate vegetarian menu.
There is a large proportion of repeat custom which I understand and hope to be one of them sometime soon.
A truly memorable stay that I can't wait to repeat.

This is the best country hotel in the north of England. The setting is lovely, the rooms a dream and the food tops. The rooms are individually furnished, so comfy and every need has been anticipated down to the tin of home-made sugar cookies on the tea/coffee tray. We stayed in a garden/junior suite. Bathrooms are huge with separate shower and jacuzzi tub. Lots of plush towels. Sitting area spacious and appealing. Bed great. Lots of closet and drawer space. Good dressing table. Breakfast and dinner included and fabulous. The best muesli ever. Clever breakfast items. Dinner had loads of choices and specials. Nice vegetarian menu. 4 different dining rooms. Huge bar. Huge sitting room. Great for cold, rainy days and opens up for warm sunny ones. Staff professional and friendly. Tops!

We stayed at Gilpins for our 1st wedding anniversary at the end of August. It is a beautiful place - tranquil and very relaxing. We stayed in a garden room where the hot tub was a welcome relief after a damp walk through the hills.

Food delicious although after 3 days we were desperate for a large plate of vegetables! Breakfast a la carte with an amazing choice - I would recommend the rarebit with apple chutney, egg and bacon. My husband was impressed with the little complimentary soups served at the beginning of the meal. This was echoed at the end of the meal with a small dessert so if you are wanting cheeses, go for it, you will have a small pud too!

All in all a very enjoyable stay - only downside was they did not doing anything to recognise our 1st Anniversary - despite asking.
