A "wonderful Christmas experience". Something unique organised for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Hotel decor and ambience, food, staff all first class - even the many species of birds are well fed in the gardens! The surrounding countryside is beautiful and peaceful. Couldn't be better.

Room Tip: We stayed in a junior suite room - lots of room and windows with views.

I booked late and was offered a special room and breakfast and dinner deal, the honesty ( room had working going on 9 till 4 daily outside, we where out all day so who cares 40% reduction :) fantastic )was so refreshing this is a very high end small hotel that try’s and succeeds in excelling in all that it offers.
Fantastic relaxed but formal surroundings, comfy seating in little rooms it almost felt like little private dinning rooms but with very attentive service.
This family run hotel offers some of the best eating I have had and all at a price whilst not cheap it was great value.
My wife has never forgotten the whole thing including the two foot deep beds to end your day in if your lucky enough to be staying over.

Best small hotel i have ever stayed at date was feb 2004 but really wanted to share i have seen its grown from this time to even higher heights if that possible

You've read all the reviews, so no need to go on too much. We had an excellent time, ate too much, drank too much but that was the idea. Went with another couple. Had a very nice room, bathroom a little small but not a problem.

Staff very friendly. Food outstanding (especially the breakfast which is world class)

Took us just over 3 hours from London on train so very easy.

Would love to go back.

We had just a wonderful weekend. Beautiful hotel, food, surroundings, choice of wines with each course, and above all the wonderful, friendly, competent, attentive staff. We didn't want to leave. Great hotel.

Simply the answer is yes !If it's a comfortable but excellently presented venue for a couple wanting to get away from the kids for a couple of days, the champagne bar / lounge is so comfortable for pre dinner drinks, and you can walk into the wine cellar to look at the wines, not just order from a list.

Room Tip: Ask for a garden suite

We stayed overnight for my husband's birthday. We had a complimentary upgrade to a garden room with jacuzzi from where we watched the llamas. This is a very welcoming hotel. The rooms are beautiful and the food divine. The bar/ lounge area has very comfortable seating and is smart yet homely, with a first edition of George Abraham's book of motoring in the Lake District of 1913.The staff are friendly but professional. We will be going back!

A recent stay at Gilpin as a couple underlined the importance of all the elements of a high-end hotel/restaurant being on their game at all times. Gilpin achieves this with aplomb.

The essence of Gilpin is to provide its guests with that rare experience of a genuinely relaxing occasion and this is something which all the staff achieve with exacting professionalism. You immediately sense the ethos on arrival. We were warmly welcomed, shown into the lounge and offered a brief tour of the main public areas. The lounge is supremely comfortable, the bar is amazing - its style vividly contrasting to that of the lounge - and is a place where a glass or two of champagne seems entirely appropriate. A variety of dining rooms offer more facets to the Gilpin experience - you can declare a preference as to where you want to dine but I would advise you to let the hotel staff guide you - they know, depending on how busy they are/the 'nature' of the other diners etc... - as to where you are most likely to have the best experience.

The food is excellent - the hardest part is deciding which course of dinner to skip, the full menu being more than sufficient except for the committed gourmand - the service is precise and courteous, the pace is just right and gives you time to appreciate every element of the meal. If you aren't overly confident in choice of wines, take Ziggy's (the sommelier) advice - he will guide you to some very interesting stuff you may well haven't tried before. Afternoon teas are sumptuous but make sure you leave room for the evening meal. Breakfasts are as good as it can get (for those of us who prefer to be served rather than doing it buffet style) - great range of choice, very tasty (only quibble would be why use (albeit very good) branded mini-jars of confitures - there must be excellent local makers of jams, marmalades, honey etc... that would enhance the breakfast.

Bedrooms are regularly refurbished and offer a wide variety of style/experience ranging from the simpler but beautiful rooms at the front of the main house to the outdoor decking & hot-tub equipped rooms in the Garden Suites. They are spotlessly clean.

If you want an energetic interlude, the hotel can offer you gym/sauna/swimming pool facilities at a nearby establishment - but Gilpin is about the art of relaxation and the Lake District offers plenty of better ways to burn off some calories. The hotel staff will offer advice on walks to suit your aspirations but my advice is to give yourself the time and space to enjoy Gilpin and revel in their skill in this rare art.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
At the heart of Gilpin is a very passionate family and team, dedicated to creating lasting memories for their guests, who return time and again for celebrations and escapes. Warmth and friendliness are balanced with extraordinary service, exquisite décor and stunning culinary experiences. This five star hotel comprises two separate estates in the beautiful Lake District, with a luxury country house on each. At Gilpin Hotel all of the 25 bedrooms have lovely Lakeland views, most leading directly onto the gardens - including six Garden Suites with their own cedarwood hot tubs, and five fabulous detached Spa Lodges. The Spa Lodges were added in 2016, and are cedar-clad with king size beds, gorgeous bathrooms and a fabulously private en-suite spa each, with a convertible treatment area, steam room, rain maker shower, free standing oval stone bath, outdoor sauna and hydrotherapy hot tub surrounded by a walled garden. Add this to the mood lighting, fires, electric blinds and a state-of-the-art music system, and all of the senses are invigorated. Just a mile away at Gilpin Lake House, six gorgeous rooms share a fully staffed boutique hotel with a heated indoor swimming pool (for Lake House guests only), outdoor hot tubs and saunas, and exclusive access to 100 acres of grounds with a stunningly beautiful private lake. Our chauffeurs bring you to the hotel in the evening to dine. Dine in either the Michelin starred main restaurant, 'Hrishi', where Hrishikesh Desai combines great Lake District produce and classic methods to deliver unbelievable textures and flavours with just a twist of Asia, or in 'Gilpin Spice' a new informal restaurant transcending international boundaries, with an open kitchen focussing on dishes from the spice trail spanning the Indian sub-continent, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Japan and China. ... more   less
