“Indulgent luxury, with a homely feel!”
Reviewed November 25, 2012

A celebration of my Mother's 80th birthday with a recent fall giving her a broken ankle. The Lake House was wonderful, the staff who are never far but discreet and friendly look after your every whim.

The house has been thoughtfully decorated and has a flair and taste that should appeal to all. The rooms are large, spacious with appropriate size furniture, complimentary soft furnishings and every modern convenience you could wish for - including games and books.

The place boasts an indoor pool, sauna, outdoor hot-tub, its own tarn and a gorilla (find out). They offer a range of activities if you wish or you could just relax in style. Each bedroom is en-suite with sumptuous fittings and large chairs or even a settee in the room.

This is style, hard to beat, food prepared in the kitchen and served to the table - an extraordinary weekend that all 11 of us enjoyed and were well catered for!

Do try - do pamper yourself!

Room Tip: All rooms are worth being in!

Well where do I start. We usually go to the Caribbean for our holidays and after being in Mexico the expectations for us were high. The good thing is the Gilpin lived up to these.
The room was well presented and unlike some places it actually looked like the ones on the Internet.
One of the best things about the whole 3night stay was the feeling of being made to feel special by the staff and managers at the hotel.
I have one small criticism and it is only small; the food although superbly presented and beautifully cooked was a little restricted for the evenings.
A special thank you to Zoe (hope it's spelt correct) for the way she and her team made our anniversary a special day.
All in all a wonderful time and one we won't forget.
We are now planning to come back on my 50th in a couple of years.

Room Tip: You will need a car to get around if you want to do any shopping and don't miss Bowness a great...

We stayed for one night at the Gilpin and I have to say it was excellet, the staff are extremelly friendly the rooms and ambience wonderful and the food truly marvelous. We very much enjoyed our stay for our first anniversary. Sadly the only negative comment I have to finish is that when we checked out my husband was handed the bill to which he raised a few doubts but being the very trusting person he is was happy to pay it, I cast my eye over it to see that we had been charged for £60 worth of someone elses drinks which were charged to our room after we had gone to bed which included a bottle of champagne and half a bottle of wine. This really should have been checked over before being presented to us as we very nearly paid it. Apart from this dissapointing end to our very lovely stay I would highly recomend the Gilpin and I would definatly return.

We felt we had been swept up and cuddled from when we entered the door as the staff are exceptionally attentive, caring and very very pleasant. Their aim is to please and they strive to achieve that, which they do extremely successfully. The Gilpin is not pretentious which at this level of the market one may expect but it was cosy, warm and very very English in so many ways, it was absolutely delightful and we enjoyed our stay here.
There were one or two observations which are not a criticism just purely our observation and down to our personal taste but we felt it took the edge of things for us as we were anticipating the place to blow us away as we had heard so much about it which was certainly all positive. It was the bedroom itself although certainly large and every facility was there to greet you, sumptious towels, gorgeous bath robes, Molten Brown toiletries, wi fi, mini bar, hairdryer etc.etc and there is the most novel quirky idea of the Gilpin cat who sits on your bed and you put him out at night so as not to be disturbed, quite lovely and it amused us so much we bought one! The room to us was not as we had expected for a junior suite, it looked a little bit tired, the bed was also too firm for us and although the linen is crisp and white it was not Egyptian cotton which we expected at this level of the market as it tends to be the norm and it is so much lovelier to sleep on, but as said this is personal preference but nevertheless you want to curl up and feel cosy in your bed and we both had difficulty sleeping. However, the bathroom was very clean but we could not use the hot water tap as it was so hot it would have burnt you and there were areas of grouting that needed some attention and the wallpaper was rippled by the bath which just tinged it a little bit for us, it was only minor but it took the edge of our expectations of the room.
The food was good and the service was exceptional and they have lovely little touches to make your meal special. The menu was the same for both nights and we would have expected it to rotate so that there alternative choices but maybe we were expecting too much.Having said that though, the Gilpin was a very relaxing, enjoyable experience and the place is made somewhere special by the high level of customer service you receive - the staff are exceptional and an absolute credit to the Gilpin management as they certainly make the place something else.
We would visit again but next time I think we would opt for a Garden Suite with the hot tub!

Room Tip: Maybe opt for a master room as we did not feel the Junior Suite justifiied its price tag. Or possibl...

Excellent service, fabulous food, gorgeous rooms. We've had the pleasure of staying in many lovely hotels. Gilpin Lodge is by far the best. We are already planning our next stay. We stayed in Dollywagon Pike, one of the fabulous garden rooms. It was truly delightful. I do not have enough superlatives to describe this hotel.

This has to be one of the finest hotels i have stayed at. The service from every member of staff was exceptional, warm and friendly. We booked a garden suite with hot tub and the room was perfect, the bathroom was spotless, extremely comfy bed and lovely private decking area outside with a hot tub. We stayed Fri - Sun and ate both nights in the hotel. The first nights food has to be some of the best i have eaten it was a pure delight. Breakfast is waiter service and again the quality of the food was of a very high standard. The Gilpin lodge has definitley got it right in many respects and we will return.
