My husband and I celebrated our silver wedding anniversary at Holbeck Ghyll. Everything was just perfect.....including the weather! The staff were attentive and accommodating and nothing was too much trouble. They made us feel really special. The food was magnificent and definitely one of the best meals we have ever had. A real find and somewhere to return to again and again.

We were rather concerned to hear that Holbeck Ghyll had been sold but our worries were soon put aside by the attention of 'all the staff'. The food was excellent as usual, high praise should go to the Chef and all of his staff.

We stayed at the Holbeck Ghyll over a long weekend in November for my partner’s birthday. It felt as if we were staying in our own country house. On arrival we were served afternoon tea, with lovely sandwiches, and homemade biscuits in one of its living rooms with dogs lying in front of open fires and the most stunning views over Lake Windermere.
Our room was amazing, again with beautiful views and the most comfortable bed. Large bathroom, all which were kept spotlessly clean.
The breakfasts were excellent, but I think the highlight was one of the best dinners we have ever had. The food was amazing, we only wish we had eaten there every night (we also ate at L'enclume, Cartmel, our second visit, and we were very disappointed!!).

This was our fourth stay at Holbeck Ghyll and it was, as ever, a most relaxing, pleasurable and satisfying experience. We first came in February 2008 and stayed in one of the lodges. The view of Lake Windermere and the mountains beyond is breathtaking - whatever the weather! The food is divine-prepared by a very talented chef.Starting with the canapes in the lounge the flavours throughout the meal are very well balanced. The difficult part is deciding what to order! The breakfast menu is also superb with lots of lovely fresh fruit (nice and sweet too). The staff are professional, unobtrusive but quietly attentive, making the whole stay totally relaxing. We cannot believe that anyone could fail to appreciate Holbeck Ghyll. We have stayed in some very special hotels over the years and this is certainly one of our favourites - four times in two years speaks for itself and we havn't finished yet!

We choose this hotel for the views & food, over L'Enclume, (another Michelin starred restaurant in area) we wish we hadn't. We opted for their gourmet package which included afternoon tea.

Good points: Views, size of room, toiletries, friendly welcome.

Bad points: Nothing major but a lot of things which added up to the feeling that is was nothing special.
Once in checked in we didn't feel as though we had any attention from staff. Don't get me wrong I like to be left alone when staying in a relaxing hotel but when we asked if there was wireless internet in room they were vague and said it should work - it didn't, although if you don't mind sitting in lobby it works there.
Afternoon tea: When we requested this we felt as though it was an imposition. We had to wait 45 mins (no exaggeration) for it to arrive & when it did the fruit cake was served as 2 wafer thin credit card sized slices after waiting so long a major let down.
Dinner: We had to wait almost an hour before being shown to our table and weren't even asked if we would like another drink - it felt as though we were in a waiting room.
Meal was good but not as good as most other Michelin restaurants we've visited. Don't expect any little extras which are the norm in other establishments (such as pre desserts, palate cleansers etc.) we presumed the fourth course must be the cheese board but that is extra, one of the four courses was what would normally be complementary (a tiny soup). The service was so slow we didn't wait for the coffee.
Room: Sherry (which they advertise as complementary in room) top of decanter was covered in dust & had a feather in it. I can't imagine anyone would touch it as it looks like it's been sitting around for ages.
The bed's headboard which is fabric was absolutely filthy & covered in stains which I dread to think what they were. If a hotel has soft furnishings the least you would expect would be for them to be clean.
Building work going on on the terrace during our stay so it felt uncomfortable sitting out to admire views (we paid extra for the privilege) while builders installing pipes.

When checking out we were charged for drinks which were supposed to be included (as were the other couple checking out at the same time) we were made to feel uncomfortable when pointing this out.
Total cost for one night with evening meal, one bottle of wine, meagre afternoon tea & breakfast just under £500 excluding service.
To some up it was very disappointing and not very special for what you are paying. What is advertised in the packages is exactly what you get (or less) don't expect any 'extra' touches. Don't drink the sherry.
Sometimes when reading negative reviews on Trip Advisor if the establishment has so many good ones I assume that the writer is just particularly fussy or a serial complainer but I assure you I'm not but felt I must write this to give an honest impression.
If you have never stayed at a Michelin starred hotel before you may think it's great (& you certainly can't fault the grounds or views, they are superb) but if you have stayed at a lot you will realise this doesn't compare well. If you are there for the view only I suggest you pitch a tent and save yourself the money.

My fiance and I had the most exquisite meal at the Holbeck Ghyll on wednesday 19th May, we received a very warm and friendly welcome from all the staff we came into contact with, nothing was too much trouble, the Hotel is in a beautiful tranquil spot overlooking lake windermere. Lunch was absolutely suberb, with, I think I can honestly say the best creme brulee I have EVER tasted!!! It is easy to see why the hotel has Michelin Star status and is thoroughly deserved in our opinion. We are very much looking forward to a return visit very soon and would highly recommend Holbeck Ghyll to those looking for something special.
