“Stunning setting for a superb meal”
Reviewed April 5, 2013 via mobile

We visited here with family earlier this month and had an amazing time. The staff are great, the location and views are up there with the best and the evening meal we had was superb.

If I had to be ultra picky I would have maybe expected a little more from our room. It didn't have any of the flare that the rest of the hotel. We did have cheaper room with a garden view but it was still pricey. Michelin star hotel would have maybe done some homemade biscuits?? We did have a look at some other rooms with lake views and they did have va va voom!!!beautiful.

But this is been ultra picky and we did have a great time, we were looked after from the moment we got there and would certainly recommend it to other people.

We have often joked about getting snowed in at a lovely hotel in the middle of nowhere, well thats what happened to us during our 3 night stay at Holbech Ghyll in February.
We booked the Ettermere suite, planning on a couple of days walking whilst enjoying the luxury of a beautiful hotel with a reputation for excellent food. The snow came down on our first night there and continued for 24 hours. The walking was hard, although the scenery was spectacular, but the beautiful bathroom with spa bath and woodburner in the lounge area of our room, made the whole stay cosy, welcoming and romantic. As for the food , it was wonderful!. Both breakfast and dinner were impressive, with plenty of choice, which is not always easy for me being a vegetarian !
The staff were so welcoming and nothing was too much trouble . From the first moment we checked in until leaving , every member of staff we came into contact with was professional, courteous but above all helpful and friendly.
We will certainly hope to return again soon.

Room Tip: The Ettermere suite is contemporary and beautifully decorated. We loved the privacy it provided. In...

You are right about our new suites - Buttermere and Eltermere, they are gorgeous and we are glad you enjoyed them, (what did you think of the wallpaper!) I was also heartened to hear that you were looked after so well by my team.

Thank you for taking the time to give us such a good review.

With all good wishes

We booked on a 3 night package to have some time away with our dog, with wonderful food and a accomadation. All the staff where first class and we would not hesitate spending more time at Holbeck Ghyll. The spa was great although as the hotel tends to be for couples would be nice to have joint rooms & the 2 lounges that we used for pre dinner drinks need a serious update from the current nursing home feel. Apart from that a wonderful time away. The suite we stayed in was very modern with a home from home feel, plus a TV in the bathroom and some real funky fixtures & fittings.

I took my twin brother and our partners to Holbeck Ghyll for our Birthday, 17 March. What a stunning building in a beautiful location. Things are just as stunning inside, we were greeted and sat for pre dinner drinks before choosing the Gourmet menu and the wine to go with each course.
Things started well with a delicious vichysoisse then a delicious deconstructed salad nicoise. One of the brilliant courses that evening was the quail with sauternes sauce and foie gras. The wood pigeon I found delicious but a few on the table found it a little too pink, I had a little concern the waiter couldnt differentiate between boulangere potato and fondant potato. Quite frankly the meal stopped there in every respect.
We then waited over 30 minutes in total for the next course, the only contact we had with a waiter during that time was to offer us the cheese course before dessert, which we declined after a further 20 minutes we asked how long the next course was going to be only to be told by the waiter they were busy that evening. During this time we sat with empty glasses waiting. The mango dessert was a bobby dazzler of a dish balanced in every respect, truly wonderful. The cheese course came which offered an excellent choice of cheeses unfortunately again the service was poor as we had to ask for the port. I'm really unsure how such poor service manages to maintain a Michelin Star. When asked to speak to the Manager, the Sommelier spoke to us and offered us an apology and again repeated we have been busy this evening. Holbeck Ghyll being busy is a great thing but not at the cost of the customers. Excellent food was cooked with skill and flare, the only bad taste was left by the absolutely dreadful service on many levels.

I am so sorry to read of your experience. I have discussed the details of your comments with our Restaurant team and they join me in sending our apologies. We may have been busy that evening but we should always ensure that service is good. I am also sorry for the way your complaint was handled.

Thank you for alerting me to these issues as it is only by listening to what our customers say that we can continue to improve.

Once again, please accept mine and my teams sincere apologies.

All in all a wonderful stay in the freezing Lake District in late March. Wonderful food, comfortable, spotless and warm(!) accommodation and amazing staff made up for the weather! Excellent views of Lake Windermere from the Lodge as well as the snow-covered peaks beyond.

We have just arrived back from a weekend break to Holbeck Ghyll a birthday treat from my husband. We stayed in room 21 which was beautiful with a great view of lake windermere. On arrival the receptionist was very friendly and gave us a guide of the hotel and showed us to our room.
We had decided to have afternoon tea, which was nice but very expensive for what you get, but the experience was interesting.
The evening meal was a little rich and we were unable to fit in a dessert, or indeed breakfast the next morning.
All in all a good weekend but I would not want to make a return visit as I have experienced better hotels and meals at a much more reasonalble price.

My husband and I recently stayed at the Holbeck Ghyll for two nights. It was a gourmet weekend and what a wonderful weekend it was! The room was situated in the Lodge and was so warm , comfortable and spotlessly clean with all the facilities you could possibly require. The view from the balcony was incredible, the Lake and hillsides and the mountains covered in snow. The food was beautifully served and the staff were fully attentive and helpful in every way. It really was a perfect weekend-break.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Squirell Nutkin lodge room and it was quiet and so comfortable.
