“Wild Boar”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 11, 2013

We arrived at the Wild Boar Inn for a two night stay at 1530 on a very cold day. The reception adjacent to the bar area was warm and the receptionist welcoming and, mostly, efficient. We were offered help with our luggage but that was not necessary although nice to be offered. Having reached our room, we had to make two trips back to reception to find out how to activate the main room lights (a card attached to the room key) and then to get the code for the internet (which is free for residents). These two issues should have been specifically addressed at check in. Initial impressions of Room 15 (a feature room) was good. A nice size with good fixtures and fittings and most importantly, clean. Three relatively minor issues though detracted from the good first impression. First, one of the beverage saucers was dirty; second, a pair of socks had been left in a drawer by a previous occupant and third, we could not get the room entrance lights to work. Another trip to reception determined that a combination of on/off and dimmer switches was required! Dinner on the first evening was excellent. We shared single portion starters and sweet and there was plenty for us. Mains were Rib Eye and Smoked Fillet steak with various sauces and vegetables. It was a superb meal! Breakfast on the first morning was very good, just a couple of minor issues prevent me recording it as excellent. First, the waitress did not ask how we would like our eggs cooked which wasn't a big issue but it should have been taken care of at the table and second, the eggs , fried and poached, were slightly under-cooked. Again, not a big issue but just not quite 100%. We partook in a Fawlty Towers themed Murder Mystery evening on our second night which cost an additional £35 per head which was very funny and enjoyable. The price included a 3 course taster menu (a selection of fish, meats and sweets from the hotels kitchen) which was well presented and enjoyable. Breakfast on the final morning was standard fare with no issues. Checkout was completed efficiently. All the staff we came into contact with were friendly and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Wild Boar Inn. Overall we give the hotel 4.5 out of 5. Just the few minor niggles mentioned prevent a perfect 5.

“Excellent food served in a most attractive restaurant.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 11, 2013

The menu and wine list are quite extensive. The grill is open to view. The restaurant is one of the most attractive that we have ever dined in. The food and service were excellent in all respects.

“Great place for people and dogs”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 3, 2013

While I'm sure many people go to the Wild Boar to enjoy the restaurant, we went because it seemed to offer all the charm of a traditional inn and it certainly didn't disappoint. While my praise would certainly run to several line, Jane S (below) has said it ll. Definitely on our list as somewhere to revisit.

“A perfect gift”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 1, 2013

We stayed here for two nights after having been given a voucher as a gift from family members.
The location is lovely and our room was quite large and airy with an amazingly comfortable bed. Although the building is very old and quaint with lots of winding staircases and corridors our room was accessible directly from the car park on one level, which made moving our luggage easy, although the staff at Reception did offer to carry it for us.
Housekeeping staff service the rooms twice daily, replenishing tea/coffee trays (real ground coffee bags), changing towels and turning the beds down in the evening. There is a real feeling of being cossetted.
The staff could not have been more helpful or friendly. Literally nothing ws too much trouble, and in addition there was a really jolly atmosphere with a sense that everyone was happy to be there, despite the fact that they were all obviously working incredibly hard.

There is a very well-stocked bar serving, among many other choices, beer from the hotel's own micro-brewery and a vast selection of single malt whiskies. Prosecco is available by the glass and there are some interesting ports.

The hotel has its own smoke house and many items on the restaurant menu reflect this. There is a good selection of both traditional and more innovative dishes on the menu using local ingredients and both the meals we had there were excellent. It is too difficult to single out any particular items but the food is of a very high standard and the service is what you would expect from a really good restaurant where the management and staff really know what they are doing.
Both the wines we chose to drink with our meals were very good (a Cote de Rhone and a Montepulciano) and, we thought, reasonably priced.

The only reason I did not tick the 'one of the best meals you've ever had in a restaurant' box is simply that in 35 years of marriage we have enjoyed so many amazing meals in Europe and further afield that it is impossible to judge which are the best.
I will just add that while we were enjoying a pre-dinner drink and chatting to the bar staff on Sunday evening several groups of local people turned up to ask for a table and were apologetically turned away because the restaurant was already fully booked.

The best recommendation I can give is to say that we were extremely sorry to leave and we will most definitely go there again and encourage our friends to do the same.
