Nice place but staff gave preference to locals at the bar and kept my partner waiting over 10 minutes to get served

Was here on the second day in Windermere before taking a train to York with a group of friends (5 of us). The restaurant was close to the train station, really cosy with open fires giving us warmth and the staff were really friendly.

We ordered our food almost immediately after we sat down. However, the starter was only served after one hour of waiting. And the main dish that my friend ordered came half an hour later then the starter. One of my friends had Cumberland sausage and mash which was quite a big portion and quite alright. However, another friend of mine ordered fish and chips which was terrible. As we have waited so long for the food, the other 3 of us was not able to have our food in the restaurant due to time constrain since we have to take a train to York, so instead we asked for a take away. However, all the side dish for the main dish was taken away. So, we had lamb with chips (wanted mash potatoes instead), vegetable lasagne with chips which was alright and chicken (without sauce) and chips.

The pub environment was good but all of us were completely disappointed with the food that they served.

Went for lunch Boxing Day 2013, ordered the soup of the day which was a little on the thick side but still quite enjoyable to eat, my wife ordered the breaded mushrooms which again were quite acceptable, then the main course, wife had a toasted sandwich which was ok, I ordered the gammon, well the plate arrived with a mountain of inedible chips they were i think re fried and were hard and when able to cut into one it was full of oil/fat. The menu stated the gammon came with garden peas, no peas but over cooked onion rings which were not on the menu. on the plus side the gammon was very good. At no time were we asked if everything was ok and on leaving the more senior person on duty just blanked us as we left. Will not be eating at The Elleray again and will not recommend to anyone.

We had been told that they did good food in big portions here and having had a busy day in the cold, we decided that it sounded like our kind of place. We arrived at about 5.30pm and they were already serving food, which was good as a lot of places in the village didn't start serving until 6pm.

The staff were friendly enough and it is a nice little pub, with a bar area and a separate dining area, both of which have real log fires.
The food was pretty awful. M y partner had soup which he thoroughly enjoyed but then had the Cumberland sausage and mash. The sausages were over cooked and the skin was very tough. I had the fried brie which came in a very large lump, was still slightly cold in places and the accompanying bread was stale too ( I think this was the other half of the baguette that came with the soup as that was stale too). The vegetable lasagne was quite nice, but was clearly microwave warmed, and it came with a massive pile of chips that were tasteless.

The food was a complete let down and whilst it seemed a popular pub with the locals they were only there to drink.

Modern decor, open fires, live entertainment, guest ales and great "pub grub"

Nice spacious bar with plenty seating, open fires to help warm up after a day on the hills. Food is probably purchased in bulk and heated rather than cooked but who cares? Great portion sizes and quick service!!
