“Ethical and good value”
Reviewed May 26, 2014

Tucked away in the Penrith, Devonshire arcade, this was clearly an alternative style cafe with a wide variety of patrons ranging from the elderly to schoolchildren. The most obvious attraction being the extraordinary, value for money, proper fair-trade coffee and a cake or scone for £2, soup with bread/roll for a similar price.

We were particularly struck with a sign on the wall asking for donations of full loyalty cards to be used for the local food bank.

What a wonderful thing, exceptional prices and a clear ethical philosophy. Wish they were situated closer to home.

“Great selection of home made soup”
Reviewed May 26, 2014

We arrived mid afternoon to find only two of the seven soup choices left. We were told that the shop had run out of bread but we asked it we could buy our own from the next door bakery, yes was the reply. After buying a hand made crusty cob we sat down to a leek/potatoe soup. It was very tasty. A regular soup at £1.90 and a coffee and a cake or scone for £2.00. whats not to like. The cafe is a litle quirky with different tables and an asortment of chairs. I did not find the owner grumpy quite chatty really. If its the food and not the surroundings your interested in try the soup shop.

“Tasteless soup”
Reviewed May 14, 2014

Visited one lunchtime for takeaway Tomato and Basil and wished I hadn't. Soup was tasteless and needed some serious seasoning (I know this is a personal thing, but it tasted of nothing!). The gentleman serving spoke only to ask if I wanted bread with the soup and seemed very grumpy. At £1.90 for regular sized takeaway soup, I don't expect what seems to be liquidised tinned tomatoes and nothing else. Also, the takeaway 'bowl' really isn't suitable for 'takeaway' soup unless you have a spoon, maybe these should be given with the soup?

Won't be be back, try the Crafty Baker (round the corner) for soup - much cheaper and tastier. Or even Greggs.

Lovely tea and Scone in here. Some interesting artwork on the walls. Seating a little uncomfortable.
