The owners of The Bridge have transformed what used to be a spit-and-sawdust pub into a family-friendly destination cafe/bistro, serving affordable drinks, snacks and meals (from soup to fishcakes, to chicken, to homemade juicy burgers). The menu covers most tastes and features tagines and curries alongside burgers and steaks. The desserts are simple but delicious too (such as the pistachio nut brownie). The interior is tastefully decorated and is light, airy, and spacious (unlike many cramped pubs in the area). The Bridge is literally on the A66 so it's incredibly accessible, and only 15 minutes from Appleby, Penrith, and M6 junction 40. We will definitely be returning!

On the A66, it is handily placed as a staging post on the way to Scotland. The food is well presented and the atmosphere is always friendly.

Motorists on the horrid A66 will see the sign for "The Bridge" and suspect a routine roadside caff. Couldn't be more wrong. We were staying in a B&B nearby and came back for a second visit. The food is very good, bistro style with Asian influences (don't be put off by that), excellent décor (can watch traffic struggling by while enjoying a gastronomic treat), with attentive, pleasant service. Whoever would have expected that here?
