“An interesting ruin in the town centre”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 8, 2013

An unspectacular but interesting ruin in the middle of the town, easy to get to, park in the adjacent station carpark.

There's quite a bit for kids to explore, the best viewpoint I reckon is from the station itself, a bizarre combination of the ruin against modern life.

“Ruins”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 12, 2013

Not much here but evocative and worth a quick stop. Located across from the train station and a popular lounging and recreation spot for the locals, the castle has one or two interpretive signs to provide context.

“An interesting site to visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 29, 2013

Usually when waiting for a train back home after a visit to Penrith we would tend to visit the site of the castle and the surrounding grounds. On a lovely day in the summer it is a great site to spend some time exploring. Refreshments are available in the litte cafe. A good opportunity to sit and watch the world go by.

“Worth a look if your passing and have half an hour”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 21, 2013

We visited Penrith for the first time in August, I am a lover of castles and ruins and was delighted when I found out previously the current castle would have been a Roman Fort, I am an even bigger lover of Romans!!!

The castle is small and is pleasent to walk around, there are some plaques that tell you what they think it would have looked like and who, how, when it was built. There were some local children hanging around playing football when we visited but, it was the summer holidays. Our niece enjoyed climbing over the small walls that are left. There was a sign for a cafe but, it didnt seem attended and the grounds of the gardens and play area stretched out beyond the castle. There is parking near the castle which we missed as you have to drive under the arch entrance and we hadn't noticed this on our way past. Worth a look if you are visiting Penrith but, I wouldnt go out of your way.

“Worth a look round”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 19, 2013

Just a ruin though still quite scenic. Directly opposite rail station. Worth a walk around. There are some signs giving info and history of the castle. And its free!
