Lowther Castle and Gardens
Ranked #2 of 55 things to do in Penrith

Attraction details
Owner description: A place of inspiration. The gardens at Lowther castle have lain abandoned for 70 years, and the original plantings have long since disappeared leaving the the architectural outlines of 17th Century and Edwardian gardens intact despite WWII weapons testing in the gardens, since overplanted with trees and covered by moss and lichen. The castle ruins are a constant reminder of the powerful presence of this place and its role in history. A major restoration project started 4 years ago and has uncovered a stunning selection of garden remains and vistas - the Pate d'Oie, Rock Gardens, Pinetum, 17th C. yew avenue, stunning views from the escarpment, and so much more. Atmospheric and enchanting, these gardens encourage reflection on the stunning past of this unique place. A small restoration exhibition shows details of the work already undertaken on the castle ruin and courtyard areas as well as 'stunning before and after' images. Tree trail, rope swings for all ages, and wild play areas for children. We are a charity. Admittance fees help us to continue the on-going works.Opening hours 10.00am to 5.00pm everyday; adults £8, children under 16 free, well behaved dogs very welcome. Why not visit the Courtyard Cafe for light lunches, soups, sandwiches and a wonderful selection of cakes and bakes. Luxury Picnics (please order in advance) or make up your own from our 'take - away' selection. We also have a gift and plant shop in the stable block. My friend and I called in for tea after we had been walking. This is one of our local cafes as we live about 10 miles away. I had a sandwich and my friend had a cake and both had tea. The food is very good not the cheapest but the setting is lovely. The staff are pleasant and helpful. Had a look round the old stables while we were there, the gardens are still under renovation and a bit expensive to go in I think it is cheaper to buy a yearly ticket and need to look into that. Toilets very clean.

“Great restoration project in progress”
Reviewed February 17, 2013 via mobile

V v good - so glad we came.

The castle will be fantastic once fully restored.

Plenty of walks and views many of which are stunning.

We came on a sunny day so we were able to explore the gardens in full.

Good value for £5 entry even though you can't go in the castle yet.

“hope for the future at lowther castle”
Reviewed February 14, 2013

amazing day out; how incredible to be able to see the beginning of such an immense restoration project; altho only the gardens are accessible at the moment. fabulous views - loved the view over the surrounding countryside at the end of the gardens - completely awe inspiring. scones and cakes in the cafe not cheap but well worth it! I can't wait to come back, hopefully to see the world record daffodil plant results.
mini car competition was good incentive to walk the whole grounds.

“Nice when it is finished.”

The courtyard cafe is nice, though a little impersonal, it is a bit much though to be charging to go into gardens that are only in the early stages of restoration!
