“Cold shower but excellent customer service”
Reviewed October 30, 2012

This was our 4th stay in the last 3 years and everything was just as good as before. The staff are all friendly and helpful and service was excellent. Unfortunately the day we checked in there was a problem with the boiler and there was no hot water for over 24 hours meaning cold showers and the jacuzzi not working as well as the pool being somewhat colder than usual. We stayed 3 nights dinner, bed and breakfast and got the first night free due to the hot water issues - all the more impressive considering we didn't even have to ask, it was done automatically.

Yes, it would have been preferable to have been able to have a warm shower and make full use of the spa facilities but we were 100% satisfied with not being charged for our first night in recognition of this.

About the only downside is that the bedrooms are perhaps a little tired and could do with being refreshed and upgraded. However this has still not put us off booking a one night stop over on the way home from Cornwall next year.

Both dinner and breakfast were brilliant with an extensive selection - the worst bit was only staying 3 nights and wanting to try everything on the menu.

Very nice hotel, comfortable stay, fresh rooms, but way overpriced. For 2 coffees and 2 scones it was £12.00! Breakfast was okay and hot - which is a good plus. Dinner at night was very good too and the staff were pleasant.

It says on their website and on a card on the hospitality tray, that if you look in the fridge they pride themselves on having fresh milk for your coffees. We stayed three nights and never had fresh milk once !!!

The bed was a bit soft which didn't agree with my back, but that is personal to me. The room was a nice large, airy room (we went for a superior room) and the facilities in the room and bathroom were good. Although the toiletries were a bit skimpy.

It is outside of Penrith, but we walked in and out twice, it didn't take too long.

Many apologies that your fresh milk was overlooked, and I am sorry that you felt our ‘Afternoon Treat’ to be expensive.
I was, however, pleased to note that you thought breakfast and dinner to be very good and the team attentive. Hopefully we might see you again in the not too distant future.

Kind regards,

Our family stayed for a weekend to celebrate my 70th birthday. The whole weekend was just perfect. All the staff seemed to go that extra mile to be helpful and smiling. The food was superb and we found the breakfast service spot on with a great choice. We had upgraded to an executive room and probably well worth it,with extra room and nice and quiet n the ground floor. The manager(?) helped with service for the evening meal. Nice to see waiting staff wear gloves.
Would be happy to come again. Suggest booking on the 'phone with Anna who is most helpful. We were charged less than the quoted price which most be a record!

I stayed here with 3 colleagues as we were on our way to more remote spots further into the Lake District. Location is ideal if you need a stopover point - 1 min from both the motorway and Penrith rail station. That said, traffic noise is minimal so you don't feel like you're so close to everything. The downside is that there are no gorgeous views of the local countryside, but hey, you can't have everything!

The main public areas are great - the wooden beams, real log fires and comfortable furniture make the North Lakes a nice place to chill out. There's a good selection of ale and whiskey behind the bar, and the restaurant food really lived up to the AA Rosette expectations - the fillet steak I had was perfectly cooked and the chips, sauce etc were delicious.

Rooms are fairly spacious and very clean - perhaps slightly outdated compared to some hotels but all in very good order with no damage or malfunction in my room. The bed was really comfortable although couples may want extra pillows as these were soft when used on their own.

Our only (unfortunate) issue was that the hot water stopped working during the evening. The hotel manager was extremely helpful to our group, offering to move us to another hotel if we wished or to let us have our rooms free of charge. As we'd already had a few drinks we elected to stay, but he still kindly sorted us out a couple of rooms at a hotel in Penrith for showers before our onward trip. These things happen and the issue was really well dealt with.

All in all a very positive experience and I will definitely be back for a proper holiday rather than work!

What a lovely place! Built like a hunting lodge, when we walked in on a murky October afternoon, the reception area was warm and inviting, the fires were crackling and the whole hotel smelled of woodsmoke. We stayed two nights with friends and couldn't fault it. We had dinner in the hotel both nights and it was delicious and beautifully cooked. The service was impeccable and the rooms were great. The location of the hotel suited us perfectly with easy access to the motorway but also close enough to the lovely places in the Lake District. I would certainly recommend it.

I've stayed in a variety of Hotel/Motels, both in the UK, & Internationally. I have never experienced the finding of a length of toilet paper in a bedside drawer before. It was soiled with an unknown substance, which almost made me vomit. Reception were contacted, & the duty manager attended, & cleaned the drawer. I've become disillusioned, as I had faith in the fact that cleaners did just that - CLEANED!! Not so!! The bed was comfortable, which was a blessing, as we had done a lot of walking the previous day. Also, a Wi-fi connection is promoted as being available everywhere, but that is not always the case. A connection was made, but if you moved slightly, it was lost. It was very annoying for me, as I make daily contact with my family overseas. To alleviate the problem, I went downstairs to use the computer, & couldn't make any connection to skype. You had to stand up to use it, so the attempt was aborted. The meal was reasonable, but very overpriced. Reception, restaurant & bar staff were polite & generally helpful. The exterior looked worn & drab. In fact, I thought my partner had made a mistake, entering the wrong Hotel. The interior was far better, thankfully.

My wife & I, along with our son, first stayed at the North Lakes for one night back in June, on the occasion of my late fathers’ funeral & due to time constraints, we opted to stay at the The North Lakes, rather than some of the smaller B & B's in Penrith.
We were so impressed with that experience, that my wife and I paid our second visit to this hotel, when visiting family last week & were equally impressed.
Once again, there was little to pick fault with.
The Location is perfect for the M6, the Eden Valley (where my father lived) and also the A66 into Keswick etc..
Our room was clean, spacious & comfortable
The pool & spa facilities are excellent.
The food, both at breakfast & dinner also excellent (recommend the Lambs’ Liver)
Special mention must go to All the staff we encountered, from Reception, The Spa & the all staff in the Restaurant – I particularly enjoyed my conversation on real ale, with the French restaurant manager.
We now plan to use this hotel whenever we visit Penrith & would recommend it to anyone.
