“High Tea”
Reviewed April 12, 2014

Attracted in by the lovely table settings of crisp white linen and china through the windows. Proper teapots that pour, towers of cakes and savory treats like Welsh rarebit and fish fingers on ciabatta . News papers to read by the fire too. Great for a leisurely Sunday afternoon tea with waitress service and nice old fashioned style.

I visited the George in February with my fiance and mother and was very impressed with the room, the staff and the food. On the first night we ate in the 1st floor restaurant which was fabulously atmospheric and relaxing. The food was also top notch and very enjoyable. Nothing was too much bother for the staff and we were impressed with their professionalism and efficiency.

This hotel is highly recommended and the refurbishment has been a great success. Superb finishes and fabrics on curtains etc. which make all the difference.

If you don't enjoy staying at this hotel, there's something wrong with you. An enjoyable and memorable step back in time.

Room Tip: My mum had to have a single room and it wasn't nearly as nice as our club room. There was a sli...

We celebrated our wedding anniversary with friends staying at the George Hotel in Penrith last weekend. The food was excellent and the staff were very friendly. Our room (6) was great having a sitting room adjoining the bedroom.
So impressed we booked the whole Hotel for our Motorcycle club do next year.

Room Tip: Room 6 will have my name on it next time

This was our second visit to the George hotel, and it was nearly as good as the first.Downside was our room on the 3rd floor which others have commented on.It was a very small double which slanted to the right ,and that was before I had wine with dinner. On our first visit we had a large room on the 1st floor which was just perfect. As for the rest of our stay we cannot fault it ,food and service was excellent and I'm sure we will be back.

Visited for Mother's Day lunch. Never been before, looks like proper Cumbrian hotel from the outside, very smartly kept. Inside is beautifully and tastefully decorated. Waited in bar until our table up in the ballroom was ready. Table well decorated and with a candelabra! Staff very helpful and attentive. 3 course meal was £18 and included a pretty git for Mother. Food served promptly and generous portions and very delicious. Staff very knowledgeable when enquiries were made as to the cheeses on our platter. Downstairs some people were having afternoon tea which looked sumptuous. Would visit again for formal meal or to try bar meal. Great day out thank you.

This was a short trip to Penrith so I was not able to spend much time exploring. The town, however, looks interesting, in a 1950s way, and I am sure I will visit again. I would also be happy to stay at the hotel which is in an interesting building in the town centre. I managed to get an upgrade from my original single room booking and I was up in a small double room on the top floor (no lift). The room was ok if not a bit trim with a view of what looked like a factory of some sort. Dinner was ok and could have fed a small family - huge portions!

Booked a last minute 1 night stay via Secret Escapes. Fantastic deal included tea & scones on arrival. Unfortunately we timed our arrival just as staff were changing shifts & had to wait a while for our tea and scones, but they were worth the wait. Standard room on top floor was very warm but turned radiator down & opened window, Bass beat from nearby nightclub did wake me up a couple of times but not a huge issue. Nice facilities very clean & comfy. Dinner was very good, could upgrade to a la carte if we wished but there was plenty of choice on standard menu. All well cooked & served by a pleasant waitress. Breakfast excellent, again staff friendly & helpful. On checking out were told we didn't have to rush to remove our car from car park. Recommend it, Penrith is a lovely town & great for the Lakes.
