We went here on the recommendation of the very friendly lady in the newsagents. She suggested we try the bar rather than the restaurant and we are glad we followed her advice. There are different menus for the bar and restaurant but the bar was a little cheaper and we didn't fancy posh grub, just a pub meal. The food was good and the beer was well kept. We had dessert too and although my apple crumble didn't set my world on fire it was pretty tasty. Attentive staff and overall a good experience.

Just a one night stay for our visit to the Lake District but really could not have chosen a more comfortable and inviting dog friendly hotel.
Reception and public area is warm and inviting, bedroom had everything we needed, the restaurant and food were very good as was the courtesy of the staff throughout. Centrally located with ample car parking too. Toilets were immaculate!
Would we stay here again........absolutely!

Room Tip: Room 11 was very quiet!

We stayed here for two nights with Secret Esacapes. Could only get a standard room, but it was lovely. Nice and warm, large comfortable bed. TV. Tea, coffee and biscuits. Nice big bathroom, heated towel rail, quality toiletries. Large bath and shower. Staff are really nice and helpful. Had complementery coffee and cheese scones on arrival. Word of warning, portions here are huge.!
Dining room is beautiful, realt tablecovers and napkins
Dinner first night I had smoked salmon and prawns as a starter , then a stuffed chicken breast wrapped in bacon served with a potato cake. For dessert Eton Mess cheesecake. My husband had smoked makerel with a poached egg, followed by lamb shank and profiteroles- all delicious.
Great choice for breakfast, juices, cereals, porridge, pastries, cheese, fruit, yogurts, full cumbrian breakfast or kippers or smoked haddock, both of which were the real thing, undyed.
Dinner the next night, one tomato juice, one melon, one chicken, one roast beef with yorkshire pudding, We were too full to eat dessert.
Hotel is excellently placed and easy for trains or buses. Will be lovely at Christmas as they had their adverts up. Would recommend, spotless, clean and welcoming.

Room Tip: Ours was room 16 which was nice

Booked for 2 nights through secret escapes. Having previously stayed in Penrith knew it was central to the town. Booking in process very easy lovely receptionist who explained everything also had a lovely sense of humour really made the weekend!!!!!

Rooms are very nice and clean and the room we stayed in was overlooking the main street, could be a problem in summer with noise if windows are open. Place just oozes a friendly appeal.... staff in the restaurant are friendly and take great pride and in fact could not fault any members of staff in the whole of the hotel. While on the secret escapes deal you have a separate menu But this does not mean that these meals are of a lower standard ... high quality food was served and unlike most places even the deal menu changed daily.
Parking available at the rear of the hotel another bonus. Will def return to this hotel highly recommend

Didn't stay there. Very good food, excellent setting and ambience. Helpful and charming staff. Warm, welcoming and comfortable on a wet day in the lakes. Would certainly go again. Lovely toilet facilities and free carpark for patrons.

The author and artist Jackie Morris offered to visit our bookshop up in Penrith. As were unable to have the event in the shop we hired the Regency Room for the evening. The staff were lovely, the room was lovely and good value for money.
Highly recommended as a venue for events

We could only stay one night following our tour of the Lakes and Hadrian`s Wall. The George remains a very welcoming hotel for visitors, locals and some business clients. The glories of this hotel include the wonderful ball room / function room that covers most of the First Floor. It has its 18th century Minstrels Gallery and is a perfect setting for a wedding or a Jane Austen type film set as well as other bookings. ( See our picture) The Ground Floor lounge is justly very popular for the ladies ( some men allowed) who take coffee each morning. Dining room serves one of the very best breakfasts I have encountered in UK ( masses of choices) Dinner is a very substantial good quality affair. Way back when I used the George extensively on business trips around Cumbria. Bedrooms have good ensuites, modern comfortable beds. As a Historic Grade 2 Listed building it has kept all the best features and its great to see the hotel is as popular as it has been for the last 200 years or so. Parking in the courtyard at the rear is free and secure. Welcoming team at the George.
