“Lovely stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 7, 2013

We have just returned from a 2 night stay booked through Secret Escapes. We found everything excellent - really good value. The deal included scones and tea on arrival , full breakfast ( there was loads of choice) and a 3 course meal in the evening. This was really good - if we wanted we could have paid extra to choose from the main menu but didn't find this necessary. Good that you could have cheese and biscuits instead of dessert ( included) All the staff without exception went out of their way to be helpful and friendly.
The only thinhg to notr is that there is no lift so anyone with mobility problems, or elderly should ask for first floor. We hadn't realised this and were on the third floor. The room was fine - spotlessly clean etc.

Room Tip: As stated above if you have any difficulty with stairs, ask for first floor as there is no lift.

We stayed here on a Travelzoo special offer and thought it was very good value for money. I'd asked for a quiet room and we were in no 18 at the back of the hotel, so it was quiet. The room was large with a king-size bed, table and chairs TV etc (and nice biscuits!). The ensuite was also clean and well-equipped, with a lovely, powerful shower. Good selection of food at both dinner and breakfast. The staff were very friendly and helpful and do seem to do lots of multi-tasking - especially Lyn (Sp?). I would definitely recommend. (the only reason I put average sleep quality, was because it was too hot, down to the weather?)

Visited the George with my partner for my birthday treat. Could not fault it really. Ok some areas/rooms were a bit dated decor-wise but you can't please everyone with decor, and it was in keeping with the grand old building.
Staff were marvellous and evidently multi-asking as al appeared to be doing several jobs at the same time, but they always smiled and were completely coutrteous. Food in the restaurant was absolutely amazing and so very tasty and plentiful.

A minor criticism for Mr Wales (General Manager) you need more staff. Not that it interfered in any way wi thour stay at all, but they really are a credit to you for working such long hours and covering a multitude of duties at the same time, all with a smile for the customers.

One medium criticism, your matre'd Norbert. Do you really need him? In our opinion, and another couple we sat next too for dinner, consider him rude, abrupt and just not very friendly compared to other venue staff. I personally did not see how him being there improved service. In fact it hindered service as the other staff were exceptional in every way. Maybe save some money from the wage budget and replace him with a more valued staff member by means of promotion?

We will return again, absolutely so. Thanks to your hard working staff.

Room Tip: If old world decor isn't your thing then don't stay here and criticise afterwards. Other tha...

Stayed overnight after turning up late afternoon in Penrith. Staff were courteous, helpful and friendly. The hotel is quaint, old fashioned but with luxurious furnishings. The bedding, towels, curtains etc were extremely high quality-in our room at least- and the toilet paper was impressive! (So many places let themselves down with cheap toilet paper!)
We had a room on the fourth floor-no lift-so it was a bit of a trek. The wallpaper was loose in places but it is a very old building.
The hotel is very central. Breakfast service was slow and the food not exceptional but still value for money. We would stay there again without any hesitation. Private car parking was a bonus- hard to find round the one way system but a member of staff actually came with us in the car- that's good service.

Room Tip: Maybe ask for a lower floor, but our room was great if not for all the stairs.

We went on the 6th July it was the 1st day of the heat wave. We had a room on the top floor of the hotel. The room was warm and we open the window to cool the room and the temperature was acceptable. We have the dinner bed & breakfast offer, the food was well presented, portions generous and it tasted good. The breakfast was very good. The staff were also very good.
The only criticism of the experience was they had a school reunion on so they had music playing till midnight or so which we could not escape from.
We would certainly go back again to the George.

Stayed here overnite as a stopover on way home from holiday. Had found it on Tripadvisor as a good place to stop close to the M6 but with character in town as opposed to anonymous motorway hotel. Penrith is a lovely place to stopover - really nice market town, and the hotel itself is a lovely old hotel but the rooms have all been remodelled - the bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was beautiful.
HOWEVER - we couldn't get a reservation in the restaurant so decided to eat from the bar menu in the old lounge. We chose Tapas just to share and they were rubbish - nothing like the menu described - very bad - we sent back and complained - they took one dish off the bill !!
Ok so we thought after a comfortable nites sleep they could redeem themselves with a good breakfast - WRONG !! breakfast was a total disaster we waited over an HOUR after being seated - people were complaining and leaving - no one came to explain or offer assistance - only received food after my partner went into the kitchen to complain for the second time and demanded breakfast - and what was eventually served was an insult. They eventually refunded guests the price of 1 breakfast !! Won't go back - shame it spoiled the end of our lovely holiday

Room Tip: Don't eat there (or take a packed lunch !!)
