While visiting some friends recently in the lake district we stopped off at the Brackenrigg inn for a quick drink. The setting was beautiful overlooking Ullswater which i believe is the second largest of the lakes. We entered the bar and the girls sat down at a table by the window while my friend and i went to get the drinks. There was nobody serving behind the bar but after a couple of minutes a lady put her head in the door and said that someone would be with us shortly. 5 minutes later just as we were about to leave the barman showed up. A pint of real ale for my buddy and a pint of Fosters for yours truly and 2 hot chocolates for the girls! As soon as we said the words "Hot chocolate" the barman stopped serving the beers and scurried off to the kitchen i presume to make the hot chocolate ..... lol! We could see our half pulled beers, we could almost taste them, but we had to wait 6 more minutes for the barman (i think he was French) to return. Now the hot chocolates were fine, the beers were great and the bar was lovely with a big open fire, the barman was even very polite (probably not from Paris), but surely to wait 14 minutes for a drink in an empty bar is verging on criminal!

Hi Donny2times, Sometimes during the winter months it can be very quiet in Watermillock, especially when the weather is inclement. On such occassions we usually ask the staff to multitask but this is no excuse for poor customer service and I have discussed your comments with the staff. On a lighter note, I think you made a poor decision mentioning hot chocolate before you had the beer in your fist, lol. Best Regards, John.

My friend and I had gone on an out of season holiday to the Lake District, we were staying a little way up the road and were recommended the Brackenrigg Inn for dinner.

The waitress greeted us as we walked through the door, and asked if we'd like to sit in the bar or dining room. We went into the restaurant and sat by the window which would have had a brilliant view of the lake if it hadn't been dark.

We were the only couple in the restaurant so we expected the food to be a bit rubbish as the kitchen would be closed. Wow the chef can really cook in this place! We had the Pork Belly 'scampi' starter which was really good. My friend and I both had the pheasant main course, the veg was actually green and tasted earthy and fresh. It cost £50 overall including a whiskey & ginger and an ale, I would say it was worth it and the service was excellent.

The waitress even asked us if we were warm enough. Some music would have made it perfect, but it allowed my friend and I to talk and we hate being in crowed restaurants anyway.

I've read some negative reviews about service during peak season but if you want the experience we had, go out of season.

We really loved this attractive pub in it's lovely setting and what views ! Unfortunately we only popped in for a drink and a comfort stop on our way through, and once we'd read the menu over our drinks we wished we had time to sample some of the dishes on offer. Next time we're up that way we'll definitely dine in, in spite of the mixed reviews. As the manager has commented, taste is subjective !

While on holiday near Ullswater we went to the Brackenrigg for Sunday lunch ,we enjoyed it so much we thought we would go back for an evening meal later in the week. We were not dissapointed, the food was very good with a nice varied menu. The place itself was spotlessly clean with fantastic views over Ullswater and the staff were lovely. Next time we are in the area we will certainly visit again.

I've been visiting the Lakes for 34 years and regularly pass Brackenrigg but never stopped to eat.
As we were staying nearby we decided to eat out.
We were looking for as bar meal. The restaurant was busy and the staff checked that we were ok with a delay of approx 30 mins.... No problem! They were in fact only 10 mins before taking the order. Polite friendly staff. Menu was limited in choice of main courses. We opted for venison & pheasant burgers... Delicious. At £13.95 a bit pricey but what you expect in the area. Beer excellent, bar area clean.
Definitely will return.
