We visited Upfront for the first time this afternoon & will go again. Loved the gallery (2 good exhibitions, 1 by a Northumberland oil-painter, the other by a group of print-makers), housed part in a tastefully-modernised cruck barn, part in a new modern extension. Liked the look of the brand new 140 seat theatre next door too (with v impressive green credentials) and would love to be in Cumbria to see the puppet theatre version of The Pied Piper of Hamelin that's on over Xmas. And the coffee shop is delightful - lots of yummy fresh cakes and an appealing lunchtime menu. The setting is great, the grounds well laid out & full of quirky sculptures & carved puppet heads, amongst trees and discreet parking areas, some of the buildings are clad in local and warm-coloured larch, and the approach is attractive too. The whole place has been set up with lots of thought & care - it really deserves to succeed. We hope it does.
