“Tasteful gallery & coffee shop in the Eden Valley”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 27, 2013 via mobile

We visited Upfront for the first time this afternoon & will go again. Loved the gallery (2 good exhibitions, 1 by a Northumberland oil-painter, the other by a group of print-makers), housed part in a tastefully-modernised cruck barn, part in a new modern extension. Liked the look of the brand new 140 seat theatre next door too (with v impressive green credentials) and would love to be in Cumbria to see the puppet theatre version of The Pied Piper of Hamelin that's on over Xmas. And the coffee shop is delightful - lots of yummy fresh cakes and an appealing lunchtime menu. The setting is great, the grounds well laid out & full of quirky sculptures & carved puppet heads, amongst trees and discreet parking areas, some of the buildings are clad in local and warm-coloured larch, and the approach is attractive too. The whole place has been set up with lots of thought & care - it really deserves to succeed. We hope it does.

“Unique setting, great food and a warm welcome.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 28, 2013 via mobile

Upfront is our favourite lunch time venue in northern Cumbria, with its atmospheric dining area, large gallery space and new puppet theatre.

As regular customers at lunch time, we have seen this gem of a place change and grow. There have been two consistent things over the years- the food has always been delicious and the service excellent. The Manageress has always given us a warm welcome and she could not be more obliging or helpful even when the restaurant is busy.

It is great that the Gallery gives local artists the opportunity to display their work and the exhibition at the moment is well worth seeing.

Thank you Upfront for an enjoyable time. We will be back again soon.

“A "flying" visit!!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 3, 2013

My husband and I called into Up Front Gallery for coffee and cake before travelling further into the Lake District. We placed our order and sat in the little room to the right of the till. After a few minutes of being constantly annoyed by flies we decided to move into the main dining area.
To our horror there were even more flies, we counted at least 10 on one table alone, and as we sat we noticed more and more.
They were in the sugar basins!!
I asked the lady serving if I could have some fresh sugar as I had no intention of using sugar that flies had crawled all over, never mind all the other things that flies do!
She was very obliging and brought fresh sugar, however i pity all the other diners that day as all the other sugar basins remained on the tables as did the flies.
We have visited Up Front many times in the past but I am afraid we will not be visiting again.

“Puppets, art and great food.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 1, 2013

We come here every few weeks and it`s one of my favourite places to eat. There is always a great choice of food (all veggie apart from the prawns) . Spinach and mushroom lasagne, pizza with a cheese scone base, homity pie and delicious paninni are only a few of the things on the menu. The prices are very reasonable. If you have room, try the puddings or home baked cakes. Then wander round the gallery and treat yourself to something lovely from the paintings, jewellery, pottery that are on display.

“pure innocent joy.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 31, 2013

We didn't acutally eat at the cafe but it did look very good. We went to the puppet show on Good Friday and I can honestly say it was brilliant. No gimiks or tricks or CGI but both my children were enthralled. The care taken to make sure all the children could see and hear was greatly appriated as was the short interval after 30 mins. It cost £28 for four of us and I can't reccomend this enough.
