“Great New year's Eve”
Reviewed January 3, 2012

We went, a party of 10, for dinner on New year's Eve. The food was great and the party atmosphere exceptional. We had a warm welcome from the hostess, and all was organised very efficiently.

“superb pub food, great service and ambiance.”
Reviewed January 2, 2012

excellent and reaonably priced pub food way better than usual pub fare. The service was great and they have good selection of real ales/wines. Gets very busy so worth booking and you can eat in the bar but this should be better publicised. It is apparently under fairly newish ownership but there seems to be lots of repeat business. It is about a 20 minute walk from the centre of Keswick but don't let this put you off you can justify having a pudding!

“Could do better than pub-grub”
Reviewed December 23, 2011

First thing to say is that this is not the Pheasant at Bassenthwaite, which is quite different in style and aspirations.

This is the Pheasant in Keswick, a nice country pub, an easy walk from Keswick through Fitz Park. It has a pleasant bar with tables and open fire, popular with locals and with separate areas for diners. Service was very friendly and efficient.
With regard to the food, it was disapointingly pub-grub. My starter of ribs was textureless and covered with a sticky barbeque sauce – but did come with a finger bowl - and M’s fishcake was tasteless. M’s main course ‘Thai curry’ was mild Indian, served with supermarket mini-naans. My steak and ale pie was a ‘proper pie’, huge, with a tasty filling, but swamped with gravy which turned the pastry to stodge. The vegetables, however, could have come from a different restaurant. A large bowl of excellent chips, a tray of carrots, sugar-snap peas, broccoli and lightly spiced red cabbage, all perfectly cooked.
Puddings seemed to be bought in, OK but not really very good, but I thought the local cheeses were good value.
So, - I’ll probably come here again but choose my courses carefully, probably missing out the starters. The kitchen obviously has the potential to produce a very good standard, and I really would like to see this.

“Lovely pub for gastro grub!”
Reviewed December 8, 2011

We headed here on the recommendation of our B&B owner and we weren't disappointed. There is a lovely open fire and warm welcome from the bar staff. The menu is definitely in the gastro-pub territory and lives upto expectations. My husband and I had salmon risotto and a lamb dish and both were succulent and extremely well flavoured with many subtle undertones. If you like good food and a cosy country pub then this is the place for you.
