The walk around Derwent water takes a whole day but it is worth the small detours away from the shoreline to take in some of the nearby beauty spots. Venture past Friars Crag (where most lakeside walkers tend to stop) and further round the lake to see some of the unique sculptures and views from different vantage points; each one is guaranteed to show you something you hadn't seen from another.

If you can only fit one diversion into your walk I would suggest Lodore Falls. It is 5 minutes from the shoreline route through some woodland and is particularly stunning in the rain.

It was cold and snowy, but thoroughly enjoyed the 9 mile walk round trip from centre of Keswick. Allow 3 hours.

Even if you arrive late in Keswick - a brisk 3 hour walk will get you round the beautiful Lake Derwent, stopping off at The Farmer's Arms in Portinscale before returning to Keswick again. Never tire of the views
