My wife and I stayed here in July during our annual holiday to the Lakes. We picked Cocklety How Byre which is the luxury cottage at the end. On arrival we were shown around the property by the owner, who explained everything we needed to know and was very friendly and helpful.

The cottage is very nice with a large master bedroom and also a double sofa bed in the lounge. However we think it would be more suitable for a family than two couples, as the bathroom can only be accessed through the bedroom. It's a nice bathroom with a power shower, with the decor matching the rest of the cottage, very nice indeed. The lounge has a large flatscreen television plus a music system, the kitchen has everything you need with electric cooker, dishwasher, microwave and dining table. There is a small patio outside the main doors; this really needs a small table for breakfast but the owner said he would bring one on request. We sat outside most evenings watching the blackbirds feed the chicks in the nest next to the dooor!

There are walks from the cottage in all directions, and there is no need to use the car all week. Both high and low levels are catered for, plus walks around the Lake through Manesty Wood. We set off through here one morning and saw 3 or 4 roe deer.

There are some great pubs in the area, on foot or by car, and can cater for most budgets. The bridge cafe in Grange is worth a vist to sit by the river, feed the ducks and eat the scones. The Flock inn serves great bacon sandwiches, and the riverside restaurant is a good walkers bar and eatery.

Overall this accomodation is very nice, and we saw no evidence of some of the critical comments from other reviewers re the owner. We found him to be very helpful, the cottage was great and the area is wonderful.

Recommended.

Great value cottages very close to Derwent Water and just 10 minutes or so walk into Grange, which has a great tea shop right on the river! We stayed in Cocklety How Stable loft which has lovely views over the valley and is very spacious with two big doubles and one single/smallish double (prob cramped for a couple but fine for one adult or two little children). The cottage was clean, with plenty of hot water, two showers, well equipped kitchen etc. Like other reviewers before us, it was a bit of a surprise to make and strip our own beds, but in the grand scheme of things it's not a big deal and the cost for these cottages is so good that the savings have to come from somewhere! Owners very helpful and friendly.

All the cottages at Manesty have been in the family for many years and the owners care dearly about them. De-humidifiers are present around the property as I can only imagine without them they may get a damp smell at certain times of the year, the building are old. Water was always hot and the bathrooms were well equiped as was the kitchen. The owner gives you quite a detailed run of what and how things work, woth taking note, even if you've had a long journey and are tired. Electricity you have to pay for what you use. We also arranged a Tesco delivery for when we arrived, this worked very well, note the owners will take delivery if you ask them if you expect to arrive a bit later.

But the views from the front are just magnificent. Also if you like walking, you don't need to use the car. Cat Bells is at the back and you can get up there in an hour or so, depending on your fitness.

A wonderful week.

This is an odd review, I guess, because we didn't actually make it to Manesty due to illness in our family. However, the owners were so kind and helpful by phone and email when we cancelled that I felt I wanted to draw attention to this. They did everything they could to re-let the cottage and were very pleasant throughout. We would certainly book with them if we were staying in the Lakes again.

We (two couples) had a super 4 day winter break at Manesty. Yes, we were lucky with the weather and it being January we seemed to have the whole of the Lake District to ourselves. But our cottage made the holiday.

First, the location was absolutely stunning. A wonderfully peaceful area of Borrowdale on a very quiet lane. Amazing views and great walks: the cottages are right at the foot of the path up Catbells and also just near Derwentwater. I can't think of a more beautiful place in England.

We got a free upgrade and stayed in 'Manesty' which had 3 bedrooms. It was really nicely done out with charming old fashioned bedrooms and a really big traditional kitchen with everything you'd need including dishwasher, washing machine etc. Everything was absolutely spotless. And it was warm when we arrived - not always the case with holiday cottages.

The quality of the accommodation far exceeded our expecations given how little we paid. The owner and his family were very helpful and friendly. There was a very good selection of walking booklets and maps in the cottage as well as books and a DVD player. The free wifi worked perfectly which was important for us. It really was a home from home.

But the best thing? Try soaking in a hot tub on a wooded hill on a frosty night, watching the moon. It was truly special.

PS. We were provided with sheets and duvet covers for the beds (we had to put them on) so I think the previous review may be out of date.
