“Typical guest house with homelike atmosphere”
Reviewed June 21, 2012

We stayed here during Easter 2012 and it was very enjoyable stay. We had double bedroom with shower on top floor (3floors). Room was beautiful with very comfortable bed, small flat TV, coffee making facilities, hair dryer and fan heater.Rooms are cleaned daily. Breakfast was served only certain time, i think, till 9.30. It was delicious and we got extras when we asked. The owners were very friendly and helpful. The guest house has great location about 5-10 mins walking to town centre.

Our first stay at Tarn Hows for two nights on the way south after a holiday in Scotland. We found the room very clean, and the bed comfortable. The en suite shower room built into the original room was well appointed but understandably very tight (the hand basin almost impossible to use with the sliding door shut). The owners were very helpful in advising about the town and the surrounding area. Breakfast was adequate, if somewhat quirky - toast seemed to appear at random, the grapefruit was notable by its absence, on both mornings the bacon was undercooked, and the owner seemed to be in the process of turning into Basil Fawlty.

Excellent B&B. Very clean, excellent choice at breakfast and lovely single room. Fairly close to town and Andy and Jo were very welcoming and helpful.
I will be returning next time I go to Keswick.

I stayed for a weekend at Tarn Hows and had a lovely stay. The owners Andy and Jo made me feel really welcome, gave great advice for local walks and even offered to accompany me and my friend. The room was clean and the breakfast was great, especially the local sausages. The location for the centre of town and walking could not be better. I would recommend it.

It is amazing how much a place can slip in less than a year. New owners have taken over and everything that made Tarn Hows so special has now gone. The little touches that meant so much - loaned umbrellas, choice of breakfast time, a cosy guest lounge where you can relax with friends - are all gone. The rooms are much the same but getting more tired and not quite so sparkling clean. Even the water pressure in the shower is not what it was. Service is nowhere near as good. Problems are met with explanations and not solutions. The style of the service from the new owners is obsequious and at the same time patronising and irritating.
So Tarn Hows is now ordinary, reasonable value and the breakfast is still good as is the availability of single rooms but my friend and I go in search of a new home from home for our regular trips to Keswick.

Thank you for taking the time to review our Guest House, I am naturally very disappointed to hear your experience was not as you or we would have wanted. I will try an address the issues you have raised.

We are more than happy to loan umbrella's but were not aware you required one, in our greeting sheet we do say to just ask if there is anything you require. We no longer keep them by the front door as they used to be, but in our drying room, perhaps this is why you thought it was something we no longer offered.

We offer breakfast between 8.30 and 9.00 which is standard amongst local guest houses, however if people want breakfasts either later or earlier than this, as has happened twice this week alone, we are more than happy to accommodate. Once again all you needed to do was ask.

Following research from guests and other local establishments, there is very little for demand for guest lounges, especially since we have put flat screen TV's and free wi-fi in each room. We therefore decided to convert the guest lounge into a third single ensuite bedroom, as there seems to be a lack of guest houses that offer single rooms.

I see from your last review that you stayed last March. Tarn Hows had just undergone a redecoration prior to being put on the market for sale. We are currently redecorating where necessary in preparation for the season. All our rooms are cleaned and checked each day and we have rarely disappointed our guests. We now also put in a customer satisfaction survey in each room to monitor standards.

As far as the water pressure is concerned we have not altered anything, however, we will look into the matter following your feedback.

Regarding problems, we can only think that this refers to the matter of air in your radiator. We did as requested bleed the radiator and also called a plumber to check that everything was ok afterwards. We are sorry if was not remedied as you see fit.

We are upset and shocked to hear about your comments regarding our style as we believe friendliness and efficiency is at the heart of a good stay for our guests and feel many of the reviews we have had since taking over last year are a testament to this.

We are all too aware of the high standards that the previous owners set and constantly strive to meet the expectations of both new and returning guests. We are pleased to say that almost all returning guests are very happy with what we are achieving and have already booked repeats visits. When there is a change of owner there will always be differences and we cannot please everybody all of the time (even though we try) and it seems we have not been able to do this with you on this occasion. However, we do feel that with some of the changes we are making which include the addition of another single ensuite room and a ground floor ensuite room, along with a commitment to the very highest levels of friendliness and service, we will continue to offer a wonderful guest experience in the Lake District.

Tarn Hows is a really convenient location for walking in the hills and the town itself. The hosts are most welcoming, friendly and helpful and the breakfasts are superb. We had a party of nine and everyone enjoyed their stay.
