From the origin of the phrase "black market" to "how the pencil helped win World War Two" there really is something for everyone.

Worth a visit if you're in the area. Very small but great little museum. During the holidays there was lots going on for the kids to get involved with and we spent a good couple of hours here. We were lucky as there was a fantastic cartoonist call Shoo Rayner on site doing workshops with the kids, google him and check out his Youtube posts - great for budding artists!!

My daughter and I visited Keswick and were blessed with beautiful weather for all but one day. We chose that day to visit the Cumberland Pencil Museum. I see that others have complained about the entry cost. We live in the states and have used Derwent pencils for years so perhaps this added to the value for us but we were thrilled to be able to learn more about the pencils we use at the Art Academy.

We found the explanation about how Derwent pencils were used in a top-secret spy mission to be fascinating. The little film they show in the museum is informative as well.

On our way out we purchased some of the Derwent pencil "seconds". It's a bunch of 8-10 pencils rubberbanded together sold at bargain prices. I even bought one for our art teacher back home. She was delighted to receive it!

The perfect family antidote to a VERY wet Lakes day! Lots for the kids to do (particularly an arty one!), quiet time watching the Snowman appreciated too.

We took our time visiting the pencil museum and were still in and out in 30 minutes. It's pricey to go in £4.50 for an adult and over way too quickly. The whole place is tiny, you don't get to see the manufacturing process at all. Don't get me wrong, it was very interesting, but I wouldn't reccommend going here unless it's raining and you really are stuck for something else to do.

Word of caution as well, the car parking is quite pricey as well (£3.50 for 4 hours the minimum you can buy) but you can get £1.50 of this back on your entry price to the Pencil Museum. I would recommend going straight here and parking to do this and a visit to Keswick town centre (5 min walk up the road) to save on parking costs. Not that parking is reasonably priced anywhere in the lakes.
