This is our second stay at the hotel. It is very nice. The staff are lovely. It is clean and tidy. Someone said in a review that there was no cosy bar. Perhaps she stayed in a different hotel to us! There is a lovely snug area as you come into the hotel with an open fire. We sat and drank wine and champagne there. You cannot get much cosier than their snug area! There is a bigger bar/dining area which is very olde worlde and there is a huge bar set in a contemporary dining area. There is also a gorgeous restaurant. The views are lovely. I didn't hear any noise from the road as some people moaned about in previous reviews. I was surprised by the review headed "disappointing". I found none of the grumbles that reviewer found. The view is lovely from the hotel. We will be back for a third, fourth, fifth visit! We paid £130 for a double room, gorgeous dinner and a huge breakfast. A bargain. Food excellent considering the price we paid. Its very child friendly and you can take your dog too! I only have two grumbles - there is no mobile signal which was a pain cos I wanted to keep in contact with teenagers back at home. You have to go into the car park to get a mobile signal. O2 don't reach there at all but Vodaphone do. Its not the hotels fault that you cannot get a mobile signal so maybe I shouldn't have mentioned it! The wi-fi wasn't reliable either.

I booked a single room for one night as I had a meeting in Keswick the following day. After reading reviews on here I expected a reasonable, good value stay. I was not disappointed. The room was a double and extremely comfortable. Iron bed, well heated/ventilated and fairly spacious. The shower room was very small but no problems - the shower itself was consistent and powerful. Breakfast was freshly prepared and delicious. A bargain stay and I would stay here again!

Room Tip: Take a bottle of water - the cold tap is a little too tepid.

An interesting break away...
The hotel staff were very kind and helpful, however our stay was a little bit like Faulty Towers. Starting with, tepid showers after 6pm, cold radiators in the bedroom, very small bathrooms and a fire in the sitting room that hardly had a flame!
The good news is that the food is plentyful and well cooked.
New year went off with fireworks, but not all the residents knew of the event!

Room Tip: Hard to say really

We'd stayed at the King's Head before and had a great experience so we were looking forward to staying again.

The staff were friendly as they had been previously. We actually selected a bigger room than the first time we went, though I must admit I preferred the previous one. There was a problem with the door "sticking" and it was difficult to shut - we did let the staff know and they did fix it promptly. The heating in the bedroom was also stuck on but they did fix this as well. The rooms we have stayed in were old-fashioned in decor, which may not be everyone's thing but in a way, that's part of the charm, and the views are superb.

Food, as before, was fresh and good - a few of the special deals they had on were good-value. You can either sit in the bar, which is more modern, or in the restaurant setting, plus there's the fancier restaurant we didn't try so can't comment on that. Nice selection of ales and wines and the little shop in the corner is a nice addition for souvenirs and local produce.

It's on a main A-road with a bus stopping right outside to take you to Grasmere and Ambleside (I think in the opposite direction it goes to Keswick) so the location is good in that sense, and also if you plan to do Helvellyn from the Thirlmere side - one of the easy-to-follow footpaths starts right by the hotel.

Breakfast was nice too - as well as the usual English breakfast they offered other options including one with local chutney and thick-cooked ham, which made a nice change and it was fresh and flavoursome.

I admit some of the rooms are probably looking a tiny bit tired and if there was anything I'd suggest, maybe a few little tweaks here and there would make it a lovely hotel.

We've been living in Keswick for 8 months and only got round to trying this place this week, having driven past it lots of times. We were really glad we did! We showed up on a Wednesday night at 7.30 with no booking but the place was almost empty. We chose to sit in the older part of the restaurant, with a cosy booth and wooden beams all adding to the character. If you prefer you can sit in the modern area near the bar.
I had gnocchi arrabiata & my partner had the beef burger. Average price for a main course is about £12, so we expected it to be nice and it really was, plus the portion sizes were very generous. My salad garnish came on a separate plate! You have to order everything at the bar, which I thought was unusual for a restaurant of this type but it didnt affect our enjoyment of the meal at all.
Only minor complain is that I had 2 glasses of white wine which were priced at £3.95 on the wine list, but when the bill came I'd been charged £5.20 each, so either the price was wrong or they'd given me a more expensive wine!

We stayed at a local self catering place a few minutes walk away from the Hotel. We read the reviews and decided to eat there the even we arrived after our long drive up.

We were both impressed, The food was hot, freshly cooked and there was plenty of it.

The staff were mainly eastern european (by the sounds of their accents) but all spoke good english and were friendly and knowledgable about the food and (more importantly) the beers that were available at the bar.

We will definitely eat there again if we are in the area.

We booked the hotel for our 5th wedding anniversary and were not disappointed. We had room 4 with the 4-poster bed and great views over the hills. The room and bathroom were big enough and the old fashioned shower and roll top bath finished the authentic touch. The only thing (as mentioned in previous comments) was the noise of the traffic on the main road. This cannot be helped and keeping the windows closed reduced the noise, but I’m not sure whether double glazing would be right for the look of the old windows.
The staff were great and very attentive, with great food and breakfast with plenty to choose from. Our first evening was spent in the restaurant as it was our anniversary, so the quiet atmosphere and candle light was cosy and romantic. We arrived there quite late on the Friday night so we were booked in for our meal at 8.45pm and they were still offering us desert at 9.45pm which was quite good of them. The second night we spent in the bar sampling the local ales and ordered our food from the same menu as the night before.
The room was very clean and made up each day. Regarding previous comments stating it was tired and dirty, I have been in 2 star to 5 star hotels and this was absolutely fine. It is not supposed to be some high class hotel. It keeps within its traditions of a coaching inn (for passers by wanting a roof and a bed for the night) with its old panelling and large fire place in the entrance area, but a modern restaurant and bar. It has a specialty local produce shop within the bar area and a large open space with a seating area to the front to take in the views. I would definitely recommend for a romantic getaway as it is right in the heart of the lakes with access to Grasmere, Ambleside, Keswick and the mountains.

Room Tip: Pay a bit extra for 4 poster room as it is away from the bar area and it has a large bedroom and bat...
