This place looks like a Belgian bar from the outside and feels like it inside with wooden floors and old period tables and chairs. The selection / menu of beers is mad !! So many. I was told the owner was previously involved with a local brewery and this was his next venture after that came to an end. I like the concept and atmosphere here - I can understand why people would go here. We tried the calamari and whitebait starters and they were definitely better than most places but not quite to the way we absolutely like them. The whitebait were visible / translucent as we prefer and not covered in a horrid batter as we hate so we thought they were going to be superb when we first saw them. But they were a bit soggy and not as lightly crispy as we prefer them. Also the calamari was slightly the same but almost there. These were not the squid you see in Iceland shops covered in a thick batter but they weren't the squid you see in a top notch bistro or restaurant. They were slightly overdone yet still pale and not as crispy as we had thought - we didn't expect them to be over crispy but they weren't quite 100 %. We ate most of it and were fairly satisfied. The chap did say the menu was a simplified cut down menu as they had a new chef. I suspect it was first night jitters and the oil wasn't hot enough or something because the basics were right. It felt like the food was quite authentic. So yes I would recommend this place. The couples on the other tables seemed to be enjoying their food which included French onion soup ( I think).
