“Belgian Beer Bar with food”
Reviewed February 23, 2014 via mobile

This place looks like a Belgian bar from the outside and feels like it inside with wooden floors and old period tables and chairs. The selection / menu of beers is mad !! So many. I was told the owner was previously involved with a local brewery and this was his next venture after that came to an end. I like the concept and atmosphere here - I can understand why people would go here. We tried the calamari and whitebait starters and they were definitely better than most places but not quite to the way we absolutely like them. The whitebait were visible / translucent as we prefer and not covered in a horrid batter as we hate so we thought they were going to be superb when we first saw them. But they were a bit soggy and not as lightly crispy as we prefer them. Also the calamari was slightly the same but almost there. These were not the squid you see in Iceland shops covered in a thick batter but they weren't the squid you see in a top notch bistro or restaurant. They were slightly overdone yet still pale and not as crispy as we had thought - we didn't expect them to be over crispy but they weren't quite 100 %. We ate most of it and were fairly satisfied. The chap did say the menu was a simplified cut down menu as they had a new chef. I suspect it was first night jitters and the oil wasn't hot enough or something because the basics were right. It felt like the food was quite authentic. So yes I would recommend this place. The couples on the other tables seemed to be enjoying their food which included French onion soup ( I think).

“Nice family lunch”
Reviewed February 18, 2014 via mobile

Very friendly staff, good food and good atmosphere. Onion soup was very sweet due to the caramelized onions, but the blue cheese croutons and more pepper made it delicious. Children's pizza was delicious according to my son. Definitely would go back.

“FROZEN CHIPS AND BURNT FISH - NOT GOOD”
Reviewed February 9, 2014

We went here with friends on a recommendation, 3 of our group had the fish and chips at £12,95. 2 out of the 3 were burned and had obviously been fried in very old oil, the portion of peas was tiny and the chips for all the meals were frozen chips, not what you expect for that money. We complained and the waitress knocked £4,95 off the total bill. Not exactly what we hoped for.none of the other meals were anything special either. As locals we won,t be back on this experience.

A great atmosphere and friendly service everytime we visit this place, the 2 course special with half a bottle of wine for £19.95 is great value. Looking forward to returning again in February

“Great place for lunch”
Reviewed January 3, 2014

Four of us had lunch on two consecutive days. We actually had 8 different dishes and all were top quality. We didn't book, but even when its busy , tables were made available. Other people have mentioned the ranges of beers, they are impressive. The soup and sandwich combo is good value, but we were most impressed with the Pizza and the Steak sandwich. Will definitely try dinner there in the near future.
