“Fantastic view”
Reviewed September 26, 2013

It was a bit late in the day so didn't take the boat but instead drove the car round and parked in the small parking area the other side of catbells from the lake. These lanes must be a nightmare in peak holidays season as few passing places and precious few places to park so probably not recommended for peak season but we were fine at this time of year.
Short fairly steep walk up with amazing views - well worth the trip.
Very popular walk and due to the wide variety of abilities of people doing this walk would agree with previous reviewers that better signage would be a good idea both for best way up and down .
We had an amazing clear day can imagine the walk would not be so fantastic if the visibility is poor so pick a clear day

“Not well signposted but amazing views!”
Reviewed September 24, 2013

My mum and I did this hike last weekend while visiting Keswick. Unfortunately neither of us have done any hiking in a long time, and so the steep gradient nearly killed me! However, it was a lovely walk with stunning views! A little bit of scrambling which I enjoyed, however was a little worried seeing people with babies on their fronts or backs!! I don't think the walk is well advertised - like the review below, a 'great stroll for families' isn't really suitable! It would be easy to trip or slip on the scrambly bits. Also, not well signposted - we missed a few bits due to the lack of signs. Despite this it was still a great walk with lovely views!

“Breathtaking views! But NOT safe for children or the elderly and needs more signage!”
Reviewed September 23, 2013

The top of Catbells was probably the most amazing view I have ever seen, anywhere, in my life. Even after just 5 minutes of climbing, it becomes unforgettable. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous!

But -- it has to be said that this hike up to the top is absolutely in no way safe for children or the elderly.
My husband and I saw a TV program, read a guide book, and heard from a local (3x total!) that this was a great "stroll" for families and (quote) "grandmothers." Absolutely not! I was terrified of slipping and falling on all of the rocky bits multiple times and there was legitimate danger for those who are not as dexterous or flexible as we currently are.

There are a few paths families and the elderly can take around the mountain instead of up -- definitely. But we met two older women probably in their 60s or 70s who had been misled about the climb up to the top as well and they were extremely discouraged that they couldn't make it after they made the trip out to do it.

Also -- and this is very important -- there are no signs anywhere (save for 2 small ones saying to stay on the path) to direct you on where to start, where to go, where to end, or how to get back to the boat docks. There were multiple times when we would reach a fork in the path or come to the end and not know how to get back to the boat dock.

Note: The boats stop running around 5pm so if you go any later than around 12 noon to hike up, you run the risk of missing the last boat -- especially because there are NO SIGNS!

With as big of an attraction as this is for Lake District visitors, there really, really, really needs to be better signage.

All that said, if you are in great physical condition and happen to be in Keswick, this is an amazing way to spend the day.

“Amazing”

We ventured up part of this steep walk and only time and arthritis prevented us going further! Great views of lake and mountains.

“Good walk if a little steep in places”
Reviewed September 15, 2013

Good walk up the hill with good views, especially at the top (but also at many other vantage points along the way). Number of routes available - one we chose was fairly steep in places and tricky on the descent as steps were slippery in the rain but great views and doesn't take all day!
