We arrived very late (1 a.m!) and, despite the hour, received a very warm welcome and found the hosts to be absolutely charming throughout our stay. Nothing was too much trouble - from finding a garage to repair our car to advising on dealing with an injured chaffinch.
We loved the lounges and their views and were delighted that television reception was not available at the hotel.
The rooms in the new wing are stunning, while those in the original building still represent good value for money and the en-suite bathroom was fine.
Breakfast comprised home-made muesli, cereals, porridge, grapefruit segments, orange or grapefruit juice and a selection from full English (or any variation), kipper, poached haddock with poached egg, toast etc. and not only set us up for the day but, sadly, meant that we had no room for the wonderful evening meal (the chef has two red rosettes).
The hotel is very well situated for walking and there are even several walks right on the doorstep, ranging from a climb up Helvellyn to a walk round Lake Thirlmere (starting from the bottom of the hotel's garden). It would be lovely to sit outside on the patio in warmer weather and just enjoy the views.
