Four of us called in the Golden Lion about a quarter to three having been turned away from two pubs outside town as we were a nanosecond after the two o'clock deadline. We went in and ordered drinks, sandwiches and chips as quickly as we could and then sat down. By this time I was so hungry I could have eaten the table top. Little did I know that within twenty minutes that would have been the better option. Those on white baguettes got off lightly as they were only slightly dry but the brown ones were completely inedible. They were so hard they wouldn't have been out of place hanging from the belt of Dixon of Dock Green (younger readers ask your parents! Or grandparents!). When the chef cut them in half to insert the filling he must have been wearing goggles to protect him from flying shrapnel crumbs. My wife dislodged a tooth in a vain attempt at piercing the crust. Their chips are advertised as something like 'chips as chips should be'. Believe me, chips should not be like those. They were that off brown colour that re-re-reheated chips go and their average length was about 10 millimetres. Our table was sticky too and full of rings from old drinks. The only reason I'm giving it two stars and not one is because the brown baguettes were exchanged for white ones and the chips were knocked off the bill. Also the barman was pleasant.
