“Excellent campsite, great location”
Reviewed March 20, 2012

Stayed here in mid March 2012. After ringing around this appeared to be the only campsite in Borrowdale open at this time of year. Chatting to the owner (a very nice chap) he said that they try and stay open all year which is fantastic. The grass was in good conditions, and the ground took pegs easily which makes a nice change from many campsites. The facilities are basic, toilets, sinks for washing up (now in a covered area with lighting). Showers were 50p, apparently not the best in the world but do the job.

The best thing though is the locations. Right at the end of Borrowdale it is perfect for walking or climbing in the area. It was really quiet at night, the road going past only goes to Wrynose pass so it gets very little traffic. There were only 4 other tents the weekend we stayed which was very civilised. The sound of owls to go to sleep to and the local woodpecker to wake up to. Its basically the way camping should be. The price was very reasonable and as it wasn't busy the owner let us pay in advance so he didn't have to wake us in the morning if we wanted to sleep in.

Probably not the location for a romantic get-away or a family holiday, but for people who like nature and the outdoors its a great base if you're not wild camping up high.

Where to begin...

Having read some other people's reviews on other websites, they have either been paid to do them or have very different standards to ours.

This campsite failed in absolutely every regard. We stayed for one night whilst doing the C2C, which was one night too many. There is very little in the way of alternative camping in Rosthwaite, so if you are backpacking - just keep on walking to somewhere better!

The field itself was quite large and surrounded by trees. However, there was a ridge in the middle which reduced the overall size you could effectively pitch upon. The field itself was very uneven and not well maintained. There were twigs and stuff all from the surrounding trees littered all over the field and the grass was not well kept making it very uncomfortable.

The facilities, if you could call them that, was basically a concrete shed that looked like it was build in the 50s. Things wrong:
* They had no lights
* No hot running water
* Very unclean
* No soap

There were showers, which cost 50p for an indeterminate amount of time, but looked absolutely horrendous. I have no idea whether they were hot or not.

Now generally I would say you get what you pay for, and I would have given the place a different rating (just awful instead of an outright abomination) if it was dirt cheap. But, at £6 per night, THIS WAS THE MOST EXPENSIVE CAMP SITE WE STAYED DURING THE WHOLE C2C and was by far and away the worst place I have ever stayed.

This review was before our time . We did not manage the site then and a lot of changes have been implemented since . It is still in the same family but by then the owner had been stretched between her b and b and the site at retirement age before it passed on to us .
