We happened upon this place as we were staying down the road and we had a great night. The staff are friendly, the food is basic but really good - fresh, well cooked and huge portions - good chips. Tremendous value for money. Its a real local and we were made very welcome when we joined in the pub quiz (sundays). The Lake District has many many 'destination' pubs that have been been done up to the nines and lost thier authentic feel - well done the Farmers Arms for not doing this, long may you stay the way you are - and we will be back next time we are in the area !

We stayed in Portinscale for 2 nights, and both evenings we spent in the Farmers Arms.
Its a lovely country pub with really friendly staff and welcoming Landlord.
The food was absolutely brilliant on both occasions.I agree with another review about the salad, very rare have i had such a lovely varied salad and being a vegetarian, that is fantastic.
Instead of the hedgerow you normally get these days and it was a really fresh.
There were 4 empty plates both nights.Hope this pub retains the olde world charm and appeal that it has now.

Visited 3 times whilst staying in portinscale and never had a bad meal. It's good home cooked food that you would expect to find in a country pub. Service was good staff friendly and food good prices. If you stay at the mount guest house you get 10% off your food bill when you show a card .

This is an unprenentious lake district pub. Most mains less than £10 and we are in expensive Lakeland. Service brisk and friendly, a mistaken order was promptly rectified, with apologies, dogs are permitted in bar area but not in carpet area. Salad as side dish, had orange, peppers egg, red and white cabbage, onion radish etc, not a blob of cole slaw and 1/2 tomatoe. Chicken pie excellent, goats cheese lasagne also. Decent glass of cab also. Will return.

This is a great, friendly pub with good pub grub and an excellent choice of drinks.
The food is well priced and wholesome.
If I have a moan, its just not hygienic to allow dogs where food is being consumed?
