After trying various options for our New Year Break, we found an excellent value for money, very friendly and most enjoyable package at the Skiddaw Hotel. The rooms were a very good size and newly redecorated. All the meals had a very good selection for all courses and the New Year could be celebrated after the excellent Gala Dinner, which included the piping of the Haggis, with a disco or a solo artist.
The main attraction is that the hotel is on the square where hosts of people gather to bring in the New Year. Previously, the timing of the New Year was rather haphazard as the clock in the square had only one hand but, this year, the Skiddaw Hotel had had a clock installed which counted down to bring 2013 in with a great cheer.
However, our memories will also include the special relationship that the staff fostered with all the visitors. The service was excellent.
They were very helpful as one of our party was a wheelchair user.
We have booked already for a third time and hope that we will continue to enjoy these New Year Breaks.

Room Tip: We used 3/4 as it is a suite with two rooms and a joint bathroom.

The skiddaw hotel is a good hotel in a great location. We stayed here for a long weekend recently on a special deal in a deluxe room. The room and bathroom was large and compared to most other hotels an okay standard but not deluxe. There is no wifi in the rooms but you are in the Lake District so reception is not always as it should be. Tea making facilities is always a good addition and this was most welcome. We had no complaints about the food which was good and plentiful. All the staff we met were really friendly both in the restaurant and the bar. On the downside there is some noise late at night and mornings but you are in Keswick centre so make use of the earplugs provided. I do think that the hotel is overpriced for the quality compared with other more upmarket hotels in the Lake District but if you are looking for a central location with a friendly atmosphere look no further.

We stayed here for a weekend with two children on a January deal and had read the reviews before booking. We booked a suite with two separate bedrooms which worked out really well. The rooms were recently refurbished and the bathroom was big. We overlooked the high street and were also above the bar - which had live music both nights - and had none of the noise that others have mentioned (maybe a snowy Jan weekend helped). The location is great for a family as Keswick has plenty of lovely little shops and the Puzzle Place is walking distance and well worth a visit with youngsters (about an hour of entertainment but kids loved it). The lake was easy distance too and made for a leisurely walk one afternoon.
We found all the staff really friendly and attentive, especially Tash who made a special effort with the children, and the rooms were serviced well each day.
..so here's my only gripe. We're not 'foodies' but we do enjoy well cooked food and I'm sorry Skiddaw but the food was disappointing. The menu read well on both nights but when the meals arrived they just didn't appear to be freshly made. The Lakes are a great place for good local produce but everything seemed a bit cheap. Even breakfast didn't inspire, all a bit overcooked, so we gave the hot food a miss on the second day. We probably would have eaten elsewhere on the second night had we not already paid for the food.
I hope you take my comments on board because I think you're missing a trick. You have a lovely hotel in a great location and a bit more effort on the food front would make for a 'fantastic' stay and not just a 'good' one....

Room Tip: Room 4 is a good option for a family of four.

My husband and I have stayed in Keswick many times as we love the town and the area but this was our first visit at this hotel. I've always like the look of it from the outside so booked a double deluxe room for one night as a birthday suprise for my husband. The room was beautifully decorated with a large, comfy bed, large bathroom and it was spotlessly clean. I was a little disappointed on the seating area which comprised of two chairs and a small round table by the window as the website gave me the impression it would be much larger and separate from the bed area which it wasn't. I had asked for a bottle of wine and a bottle of coke to be in the room on arrival and these were waiting for us but we were only provided with two glass tumblers and no wine glasses. One of the tumblers had lipstick on it. Minor errors but could and should have been avoided. Unfortunately there was a group of people outside the hotel shouting and arguing until the early hours of the morning (finally shut up about 3am) which meant a disturbed night, but not exactly the hotel's fault. Plus there were ear-plugs provided so I suppose we should have used them!! Breakfast was excellent, hot and tasty. The staff we encountered were all very friendly. The hotel only has a few car parking spaces but will provide a parking pass to park in the public car park immediately behind the hotel for free. I would recommend you park in the public car park anyway as it is extremely narrow and tight to get in and out of the hotel's car park. When we checked out they allowed us to keep the pass until we were ready to collect our car and drop it off then - no chance of forgeting to do so as they will charge £150 to your credit card if the pass is not returned!! We enjoyed our stay at the Skiddaw Hotel but I don't think the room was worth the £152 bed and breakfast rate I paid (and this was the discounted price!!) so I would only stay here again if I got a much better deal.

Room Tip: Our room was at the front of the hotel which resulted in the problem we had with noisy people outsid...

Service was great, nothing was any trouble, staff were all lovely.
We had an afternoon sandwich which was very fresh too.
We got a summit room(no.52), it was spacious, with a table and chairs so you could enjoy a drink together.
Bathroom was quite small but very clean, we also got robes.
Very good location with easy free parking.
There was entertainment on at night but we went round a few bars.
We paid £143 for the room for one night, although the hotel was nice, I have had better value for money at hotels with a better class.

We also sampled the Abraham cafe in george fisher the next day, this was an absolute delight. Great food, service and value for money.

Some fantastic walks in the area.

Stayed here on a post christmas deal. Evening meal and breakfast was lovely, well presented hot and served quickly. The room was reasonably large with two rellaxing chairs and a six ft bed . It was however a bit of a trek with cases down twisting corridors and up and down stairs. There was a lift available, but was informed it was not really much quicker or easier. The hotel is in an excellent location and has a nice conservatory to sit and have a nice drink or cocktail. As much as I enjoyed and would recommend this hotel I would ask for one thing to be made available. WIFI. Although it is available in some parts of the hotel it was not available in the rooms. Come on please its a modern expectation. That aside it was a great stay and would like to have another visit later in the year.

Had a super showbiz reunion here in October and wanted to have a more relaxed , just the two of us revisit .Everything was still first class , from reception to room and food standard.. The link up with other local hotels gives easy access to swimming and gym facilities.
