We stayed at the hotel for our 4th wedding anniversary. We love Keswick so we knew what we'd be getting with the location and we'd always wanted to stay at the Skiddaw Hotel.
We took advantage of a good 2 night deal with Secret Escapes and the promise of an upgrade to the Summit room from the hotel itself as there were no 'dog rooms' available.
The hotel is pleasant and well run. The staff friendly and helpful. When we arrived we were given room 43, a standard double. A quick phone call later and a reminder to the staff about a free upgrade to the Summit room and we were moved to room 44; an almost identical standard double. We decided not to 'kick up a fuss' as it was a really lovely room, freshly decorated and more than adequate for two nights stay. The food was lovely, drinks in the conservatory were entertaining and lends itself to people watching perfectly.
On the down side, our room was right beside the large carpark and on the night club side of the hotel. It was extremely hot, as was the dining room. Everyone could be seen fanning themselves over breakfast! On the whole though it was a thoroughly enjoyable stay. I probably wouldn't pay the full price but if another offer came along I would certainly stay again.

Room Tip: Try and avoid room 44, very noisy at night due to it's proximity to the night club next door.

We stayed here for two nights in March 2011 & thouroughly enjoyed our stay. We were in the 'Summit' suite, it was so plush! The hotel is located on the market square in the town centre, & a free parking pass is provided for hotel guests to use the car park at the rear. The cumbrian cooked breakfast in the morning was a great start to our day. The staff were friendly & knowledgeable about the local area. We would love to return to this hotel one day.

The refurbished character room was good - clean and roomy. The restaurant was very disappointing . The service was poor and the food was only average. We asked for venison on menu - all gone and next morning asked for haddock for breakfast - all gone! Poor service also in restaurant which let the hotel down.

Room Tip: Room to side or rear very quiet although no view to speak of. Long walk along corridors to room 51 but this did not bother us.

My wife and I both seniors booked the above hotel for a two night stay. We asked for consideration re the room as I have a back complaint and I am not good with stairs. We arrived and was given a room on the third floor _no lift. Up flights of stairs around corners through doors. The room was comfortable but hot as no air conditioning .
We went down for the evening meal which was included in the package, the restaurent was so hot. I enquired about air conditioning and was told the coach party had complained re the COLD. When they left it was turned on . I had roast lamb as the main meal , it was unchewable . I pointed this out to the waitress . She took it back to the kitched and we never heard another word about it. We was then told by another visitor a lady had complianed and her meal was replaced .

The next day after a sweaty night we were informed the hotel loaned fans out.. No fans why?? the same coach party who were COLD had taken all the fans . Much later we were given one .

We did not dine the second night even though a free bottle of wine was included in the package.

THe hotel apparently has had extensions fitted over the years but no increase in power hence the lack of air conditioning,

In correspondance with the hotel I was offered Fifty pounds off my next stay with them. That is an offer I will never use .

I gave it two stars because in main the staff were pleasent and helpful and the room was comfortable but hot. the breakfasts were good. No one informed us the the shower was over the bath !!.

It seems that to have the comforts in this hotel one must travel in a coach party. Did we catch it at a bad time ??

Room Tip: On booking ask where the room will be sited.

Just returned from a lovely 2 night break at the Skiddaw Hotel, and had a lovely time with my daughter, her husband & 12 week old baby. We stayed in the Cottage Suite which was just out the back of the hotel. The cottage was equipped with everything you could possibly need for a weekend or longer, including a full size fridge freezer, automatic washing machine , cooker & microwave. It was open plan layout downstairs and had 2 bedrooms with extra comfy beds and lovely bedding & pillows , and newly fitted bathroom upstairs with over the bath power shower.
We stayed on a dinner, bed & breakfast rate and the meals were lovely, lots of choice, waits a 4 course a-la-carte menu each night & continental or full Cumbrian breakfast each morning. We were very pleased with the food choice & quality.
All of the staff we encountered we're friendly & polite , and the restaurant staff made us feel very welcome, especially with a new baby to manage at meal times too. We had a regular table reserved & set up for us for each meal and the service was fantastic. We also revived a packed lunch one day which included a choice of sandwiches, fruit, biscuit & crisps, which came in useful for our walk to the lake one day.
The hotel is situated on a popular pedestrianised High Street with lots of shops, restaurants & pubs on the doorstep. We did not hear any noise from any of the local bars, but ear plugs were provided in the toiletry basket if needed. An ample supply of luxury toiletries & tea/ coffe etc were provided along with a basket of local biscuits .
All in all a very enjoyable stay and we will certainly be back !!

Room Tip: Stayed in cottage suite to allow us more space for new baby & all that travels with him !
