“Excellent location, great views, and friendly service”
Reviewed August 12, 2013

We had a most enjoyable two night stay at Highfield Hotel recently. Of course it has the best views in Keswick, at least in the front rooms, and our room was also comfortable and spacious. The cooked breakfasts were delicious, as was the one evening meal which we had. As we weren't that hungry on the second evening we ordered soup on room service, and this was delivered promptly and efficiently - again delicious.

What was particularly notable in a small hotel was the friendly and professional service which we received, particularly from Nick, the young manager. He kindly carried our heavy suitcases from and to our car; this was much appreciated as I am recovering from a recent back operation.

So well done Highfield Hotel, we will be back.

Room Tip: Choose a front room with a view to make the most of the fantastic location

The Highfield Hotel is well located, just a few minutes' walk from Keswick centre, and looks out across a small pitch and putt course and public gardens, towards Lake Derwent. The hotel has a car park at the rear which is very useful, albeit not terribly well sign-posted.

On arrival we were warmly welcomed and given our key. We were staying in the 'East Turret' room which was a standard, clean and well-furnished double room with en suite, but which also had a door leading to a small set of stairs that took you up to a bright little outpost with large windows looking towards the Lake. The view was great. It was certainly a novel room. Unfortunately, however, there was also a strong smell of paint gloss in the entire room which was very difficult to alleviate, even by opening all the windows. There was also a mark on the bed sheet (but the staff very quickly changed this). I also noticed that the tea and coffee cups weren't terribly clean.

Dinner and breakfast were both good. The portions for all meals were certainly generous! One unusual complaint would be the odd, eclectic background music that was piped into the dining room(!) - dramatic renditions of Jerusalem or The Circle of Life (amongst other like and varied pieces) perhaps didn't quite fit the relaxed dining experience!!!

The staff were friendly and attentive. Service was good. It was a shame though that on the day of our departure a whole new batch of staff appeared to have taken over on the rota - this made the hotel feel a little impersonal.

Overall though the Highfield was good. Having said that, would we return if we were staying in the Lakes again? Despite the view from the room, probably not. There's a hotel in Grasmere that we love too much.

This was a nice hotel in a wonderful location. Anything one would care to do is within a short walk of this hotel and, with the right room, the views are magnificent. Unfortunately our upcharge "lake view" room was on the top floor with a limited view through a dormer window. The room, although clean, was relatively small with dated furnishings. The grounds/gardens in front of the hotel were extremely overgrown with ground cover encroaching upon the stone walkway from the street. Parking is free and convenient. Breakfast was excellent as was the service.

Room Tip: Be wary of "lake view" rooms as this may be a small room with a dormer window.

We stayed in the Highfield Hotel for 4 nights in July 2013 and found the staff to be most pleasant and helpful and the breakfasts were excellent.
The ambiance in the hotel was excellent and the service for drinks etc was first class.
This is one of the very few hotels in Keswick with it's own private car park so if you want to look after your car rather than put it in a public car park then this hotel is for you!

Room Tip: We travelled with three other couples and all the rooms were very good. A choice is available when...

We booked this hotel based on the Tripadvisor reviews and was not disappointed. The view from our front 2nd floor room 4 was breathtaking. The room itself was a little smaller than the photograph made it seem to be and the furniture was a little dated as was the en suite bathroom, which could do with an overhaul, but did function ok. The meal and breakfast was superb although I agree with a previous reviewer that the plates were so hot that the food continued cooking. We actually had to wait for our breakfast to cool down! Staff were all very friendly and the location is great with free parking and a short stroll into town or to the lake. Would I go again, probably not as there are many other hotels to try, but for the views I would!

Room Tip: Room 4 has a balcony and a view of the lake and mountains. Nice and quiet.

I wish I had done this review sooner after our stay in April this year, but was stopped by my browser breaking last time! Me and my boyfriend will never forget the Highfield as it was the base of our first, and such a perfect holiday. The manager Nick was an absolute dream when booking, and was so nice about me annoyingly wanting to change the date of our stay, and then changing back! We stayed in room 16 which was lovely, with it's balcony, view of the mountains and lake, and luxurious decor. Nick somehow carried both our heavy luggage bags up with him at once. Everything was clean, comfy and perfect in my eyes.

After each great day in the stunningly beautiful location - taking the launch to different stops all around the lake, going on walks and climbing Catbells - returning to the Highfield was the best thing ever. Going to dinner was such a lovely ritual that we'd dress up for, and we'd love sitting in the cosy lounge with our tasty canopies and drinks to sit with while deciding what courses to order. The dining room was lovely and and the food was the best we've both ever had! This is taking into account the amazing warm, fresh bread made every day in different flavours, and the sorbet between courses! The service was perfect and we were made to feel like royalty!

Breakfast every morning was of course, amazing too and they served everything you could want for the perfect posh breakfast. Every day the staff did all they could for us and nothing was too much trouble. And aside from this.. IT WAS THE BEST BARGAIN EVER!! I still can't believe how good the deal was - maybe because it was in winter.

Thank you again for such a perfect time ^_^ we still reminisce about this holiday!

We stayed in the East Turret room, the only shame was the outside had scaffolding around, so it stopped the view a little. I do appreciate places of this size need updating and it did not spoil our enjoyment. The room was very homely and the bed very comfortable. Nice stay and the breakfast was fantastic.
